You eliminated my first guess which would be the CD medium.
My second guess would be the Sony drivers. Have you installed or changed them recently.

My next suggestion would be to try different writer software if you haven't done it already.

You don't say what burning software you are using but if it's a new one it may be mis-identifying your drive as an older model. You can usually see that in the burner software where it identifies the drive type.

    Just my guesses.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

  3. Yes, i installed NERO newest version 5.5.10.something . Also i tried EZ CD CREATOR 6, windows xp burning thingy, clone cd, and easy vcd (for my movies) but they're all 32x. Change back to my old version of NERO after uninstall the new one won't help. NOw i'm using the older version 5.5.00 still doesn't work. Maybe there is a limit to the burner?

Can't be a limit since you already said that you have used 40x before.

In Nero when you click on the recorder menu and "choose recorder" does it have the right model number for your drive?

Here's what I would do if it was my problem:

Remove the hardware CDR/RW drive in the control panel / system / hardware / device manager then reboot and reinstall it with the original drivers.

Having eliminated a number of possibilities it's probably the device drivers that are incorrect and this will reset them.

When you reinstalled the writer did windows prompt you to install the drivers or just used the default ones?

If it only used the default ones you should try to override them by using the install cd you got with the drive.

Go back to same control panel options (as I stated before) and right click on the device and choose "update driver" then choose "update from list or specified location" point it to your CD rom where the drivers are stored. Follow the prompts.

It's possible the wrong drivers are in the default windows location so need to be overriden with your original drivers that came with the drive.

If you don't have the original driver cd then go to the company site and download the one's for your drive.

  11. Some CDRom drive (sony in particular) allow you to reduce the speed in order not to brreak (shatter) the media at high rotation speed. I know for a fact that the 52x (cdrom) have that feature. By default it is 48x. To get 52 you have to hold the button for about 5 sec.

verify your drive doc ( search the sony site if you do not have it) to make sure that this does not apply to you. I am unsure about the cdrw
