  1. I have been researching DVD writers for myself.

I was under the impression that Lite-ON will be comming out with a DVD writer (not sure if it was dual format or not), but I found this site (thanks to BOB W) selling the above drive: http://avlogic.com/product.cgi?code=18030056

I could not find any info as to if this was new or on the market for awhile.

Does anyone know about this or have any if on it?

  4. be insterested in peoples findings on this burner..
i have a funny feeling its just a rebaded sony cause of the 8meg buffer... liteon always used low amounts of buffer for thier cd writers claiming 2meg was enough with burnproof... fair enough.. also that liteon was delayed or something and the price seems like around the sony mark..
anyway we'll find out in due time i guess..

I was under the impression that Liteon has been working on this drive for a while, so I doubt its a rebadged sony. Also I have had like 4 lite on drives and none of them were rebadged anythings.

  6. Since lite-on is usually the rebadge-ee and the brand itself has no presence in retail, I doubt it's a rebadged anything or the profit margin will be incredibly thin, if any.

  7. The LDW-400D IS a rebadged Sony. Lite-On's "own" DVD writers (LDW-401S/D) have been delayed so I guess that's why they release a rebadged Sony now.
The specifications and look of the drive are the same as Sony's OEM drive:
    Speed: 4X max. DVD+R Write; 2.4X max. DVD+RW Write; 4X max. DVD-R Write; 2X max. DVD-RW Write; 8X max. DVD-ROM Read; 24X CD-R Write; 10X CD-RW Write; 32X (CAV) CD-ROM Read
Random Access Time: DVD: 250ms CD: 300ms
    Buffer Memory: 8MB
    Check here for pictures.

  8. yup looks the same, just not as ugly as the sony
oh well MAYBE liteon have their own firmware for the drive, which could be a good thing regarding riteks g04's.

Its the 8meg cache that led me to believe its a rebadge sony drive, liteon never use that much

Not the DRU-500A(X) but the LDW-400D has the same bezel as the Sony DW-U10A.

Ordered this yesterday for $279.00, should arrive tomorrow(15 May). Will post findings soon. Yes, its the same as the Sony. Already have their cdrw burner and it hasnt failed me so I'm sticking with liteon(even though its a sony).
