After reading Shocan's excellent guide about the settings for TMPGEnc I am a little confused about the setting to use in the video source. The How-To guide says to use 1:1 VGA. The guide explains that 4:3 is for sources encoded for TV and 1:1 VGA for sources encoded for computer video. I feel that I should use 4:3 since even though I'm capturing from my computer the source was still encoded for TV. Am I right?

  2. That's what I would do. I think people get confused with resolution and DAR (display aspect ratio). You PC monitor has a DAR of 1:1. Your TV has a DAR of 4:3. Most movies are shot at 16:9. However, I can get these DARs at any resolution. Take a look at:

    for more info.

  3. I use this very simple rule of thumb

    for source
if it is 352x240 source is NTSC 4:3
if it is 352x288 source is PAL 4:3
if it is any size other I use 1:1

TMPGEnc is very good with the resize - it will take very odd sized DivX's 360x615 and strange stuff like that and correctly resize it to 4:3

Cool, thanks guys! One more thing, if I've already deinterlaced my video source in VirtualDub then I don't have to select "Interlaced" in the Video Source Type in the Advanced type right?
