  1. Can a DVD+rw/r recorder use dvd-r media? I Just got a dvd+r from my father, and can't find any info on which media I have to buy.

More specifically, it's from a brand new Dell 4550 desktop. It's an NEC ND-1100A DVD+R/+RW writer OEM.

On the specs sheet I found at NEC it has:

    Playable Formats DVD-Video ROM, CD-DA, CD ROM+CD-DA, CD-Extra

Readable Formats DVD-ROM, DVD+RW (video and data), DVD+R (video and data), CD-DA, CD TEXT, CD-ROM, CD-ROM+CD-DA, CD-ROM XA, CD-I, Photo CD, CD EXTRA, CD-G,

Writeable Formats DVD+R (video and data), DVD+RW (video and data), CD-DA, CD-ROM (Mode 1), CD-ROM XA, Photo CD, VideoCD, CD-I, CD-Extra, CD Text

DVD Writing Modes Multisession (DVD+R), Sequential, Random Access (DVD+RW)

CD Writing Modes Track-at-Once, Disc-at-One, Session-at-Once, Multisession, Packet Writing

  2. You should be able to play a DVD-R/RW disc that has already been recorded, but you cannot record to a DVD-R disc. You need to buy media that say "DVD+R" or "DVD+RW". You can find them almost anywhere. You shouldn't have any problem with Verbatim or TDK which you can find almost anywhere (Target sells both).

Christof, Ive already know what I wrote. It specifies a specific "MODE" of writing, DVD+R. I wanted to know if it could write to a DVD-R disk. Is there a physical difference between the two disk media that makes them incompatible? What is the difference between dvd-r and dvd+r blank disks?
