is their any way of making any dvd player play svd/dvd copie

hi m8s first time in here a friend of mine recomended this site good so far

right to the problem my mum bought a all singing all dancing dvd player or so she thought you know the speakers better quality all usual stuff only problem is it will not play svds or other films only cds and shop bought dvds is their any way of making it do it without buying a new one
the dvd player is a grundig
help please getting grief all the time cheers
