I know that this great site has lots of related posts but can anyone kindly advise on the viability of preparing a DVD with menu and play back TV episodes stored in DIVX format on a compatible DVD player.

I have TMPGEnc.DVD.Author.3 and have converted two programs in MPEG format to DIVX with menu using this. I will burn it to DVD-R. I am struggling to know how to use this app with its full potential.

I do not as yet have a compatible DVD player to try it.

Are there any problems with this procedure and will any DVD player that plays back DIVX play it back or do i need to get a special DVD player to handle the DIVX files with the menu.

    Thanks all

    1) the menus you've created are INSIDE the DivX files. Most DivX players only give a simple list of filenames to select from.
    2) most DivX certified players should handle the files themselves without issues.
    3) some DivX players may only recognise DivX files on CD-R/RW media, expecting DVD-R/RW disks to hold normal DVD-Video content (I know, I've got one!)

If you want to display the divx menu's and use chapters within TMPGenc DVD Author you will need a Divx Ultra compatable player to be able to view them, otherwise as TJohns pointed out you will only view the file names.

If you want to test what you have created to date, use the Divx Player software from Divx.com. You can at least see how the menus are functioning at the moment.

But for standalone playback you need a Divx Ultra Certified player.

Thanks all for the very clear replies.

So this means that if I just put the DIVX files on the disk without a menu the player will show the files for playing.

Do I need to be careful that the DVD player will play DIVX files on a DVD as well as a CD.
I want to be able to play them on a DVD.

    Thanks again.

Most players will play from DVD. Some older players won't. Often the manual doesn't tell you if it will or won't, so create a disc and take it with you when you buy. Ask to try it out first.

Basically, if you don't create a menu at all, then player will just list the files and folders on the disc.

If you do create menus and play it on a standard Divx player, it will ignore the menus and just list the files.
