Hi! after waisting a day of my time and many many CDR's i decided to quit with "VCD header trick" and it might not play with my dvd player nway so i found out that i can play XVCD on my dvd player.... and the quality REALLY improved greatly! compared to a VCD! vcd might be good if your original is a dvd movie but mine our home videos... nway... my question is SVCD da same quality as XVCD?

i set my bitrate at 3000!!! its suppose to be 2500 like it says but i decided to go higher and 3000 is max for me...

    thanks all! tc!

My cheapo Apex 1201 ($53 US) will play SVCD's at bitrates over 5000.

I make my xSVCDs with a min of 300, max of 3000, and an average to fit; 2 pass VBR with 192 mp2 audio, usually downmixed from the AC5.1 track. I typically make 2 disks up to 100 minutes, 3 disks up to 135 minutes and 4 disks over that. It depends on the movie, action flicks get a higher average and chick flicks get a lower.

On my 27 in TV, with only a Dolby Surround stereo, I can't really tell the difference between the xSVCD backup and the original DVD. One BIG difference is I don't have the 10 minutes of annoying Disney commercials I can't forward through!!!

XVCD doesn't say much, but if you've just raised the bit rate, SVCD will look better, at least at that bit rate, because of its higher resolution.

Since your player seems rather open minded when it comes to VCD, try creating an XVCD with SVCD resolution and bit rate (but keep it mpeg 1, and author as VCD) to see if your player still accepts it. If so, you've lost (almost) nothing, as picture quality wise, mpeg1 is not inferior to mpeg2 at the same res and bit rate. You can't do selectable subs and such fancy stuff, but...
Keep in mind tho, that your next DVD player may not be so friendly to your way out of specs VCD!

  6. You should try CVD. Its standard resolution and offers great quality.

If your player can't do SVCD, I'd think that CVD is out ouf the picture (no pun intended) too, as it's basically a SVCD with res 352*576/480 (PAL/NTSC) instead of 480*576/480
My suggestion was - do a XVCD exactly like you do now, but try with the SVCD res of 480*576/480. If it works, but is too "blocky", try CVD res too. Hope you use CD-RW!

  11. CVDs are more compatible than SVCDs as it is Half-D1 resolution., which is a standard resolution for DVD.
