I keep reading about new firmware for the Sony DRU-500. Since there seems to be a lot written on version 2 before I bought my drive, and since the box my drive came in says it will burn at 4X, I'm assuming that I have a new version of the firmware. But how do I tell for sure which version I have?

  2. Bear with me because I'm not on my burning machine, but if you right click on the drive in Explorer and then go to Properties, and then go to Driver that should tell you the details.

My Sony box also had 4x written all over it but it did not have the latest updates. The first thing I did with my Sony was to upgrade (to 2.0f I do believe, but as I said, I'm not near my machine...) As a general rule it's good to upgrade to the latest firmware (although some people take the "if it ain't broke" position -- in this case, though, Sony obviously thought it *was* broke or they wouldn't have issued other firmware "fixes").

Thanks for the answer, but that didn't work (or I'm looking at the wrong thing). I've looked at Properties in Explorer (have also tried going to the device manager and clicking on Properties for the drive there). I can find the driver version (5.1.2535.0), but not the firmware version.

If I already have 2.0f and I tried to install it again, will that cause any problems?

  4. Hi Bob......
If you have Nero installed, go to the "Recorder" menu and click on "choose recorder". There you will see the drive information, including the firmware revision info- when you select the DRU-500A. If you don't have Nero installed- DL it, it works well with the DRU-500A.

P.S..... Even with the new firmware, I've only burned DVD's at 2.4X max. It may be the media... but who knows.

Thanks again, but I don't have Nero. I'm using Easy CD-DVD Creator and I tried looking every place I can find in there for the info.

  7. 1. Open your Easy CD Creator, select "make a data CD", and then click on the button for most compatible format.

    2. Click the third button on the bottom of the new big window.

    3. Select a drive, and then you can see info including the firmware rev on the drive.

Have a look at my 2 posts in this thread:
    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=155520

Will show you links on where to get the new firmware and how to tell what your current firmware is.

The thread in general will also tell you not to expect 4X burning on all 4X media.
The glass is neither half-full, nor half-empty.
It is simply twice as big as it needs to be.
