  1. Same as DRU-500A but write DVD+RW at 4x and CD-RW at 16x.
I bet on a simply firmware upgrade ... what's your opinion?

How many burns have you done with it? Could it be that this generation of recorders have a limited life span?
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

Well... I don't think it has that much to do with the number of burns. Seems like some people's drives have died only a few weeks after they bought them, when they only had burned a couple of discs. Some people seem to be able to burn hundreds and hundreds of discs without a problem. My drive is working very well at the moment. Will it also die in a couple of weeks? I hope not. And now Bob W's burner have died! I hope they will get rid of this someday...

  6. Well, I have my DRU-500A for about 4 months and I have made about 200 backups / Wedding DVDs / DV 2 DVD conversions and I never had any problem (initial problems with Intenso DVD-R and imature firmware).

I can speak about the future, but at the present this recorder RULES! 8)

    About 300 burns.
Bob W... what are you basing your statement on? Is it your personal experiences (if you have burnt 300 DVD's), or have you studied other people's "results"?
"Around 300 burns." seems quite exact, so I wanted to know where you have gathered that information.
My experience is that some people can burn many hundreds of disc without a problem...

... and some people only seem to have burnt 10 discs when their drive have crashed...

  14. The DRU-500A will not be upgradeable to the same specs as the DRU-510A with a firmware update.

    This according to Sony Europe.

BOB W, why do you continue to harp on the fact that your Sony burner died? Every post regarding Sony, no matter what it is, you throw in your "burner died." That isn't the topic of discussion on the thread and it's obvious from the countless others who have the Sony Burners, that you either screwed it up yourself, or you just got a defect. If you got a defect then just write it off as "SHIT HAPPENS." You have been posting that info as if you don't have a warranty and purchased that drive off of Ebay. If so, then it's "Buyer Beware."

But I have seen people claim to have already burned 500 disks with their Sony burner and it's still burning like day one,...which it SHOULD. I've also seen several posts on this very forum about DEAD PIONEER drives, but I don't see the same people posting in EVERY pioneer thread that their burner died.

  17. OK Sony makes the best quality DVD burners no doubt about it.

Oh and here is a sweet deal that a member here turned me onto for a 4x DVD+R burner for $163 USD plus $11 for shipping. I ordered one last night and today got a confirmation that it had already been shipped.

  18. Bob W, lol...if you don't feel Sony makes quality DVD burners, then don't say it to make anyone happy. I was making a point that you have mentioned that your burner has died in many threads and if you look on this site, you will see MANY Pioneer burners have also crapped out on people. It sounds like you got a DUD. Did you purchase the Sony burner from an online store or from Ebay? If not, where did you purchase it. I am curious.

  19. I really get pissed when I spend $350 for a piece of consumer electronics and three months later it useless sorry about that. Now Monday I did go to BestBuy and paid for yet another DRU500AX which shows up in device manager as a DRU500A so hows that for a marketing strategy just change the model number on the box charge a few dollars more and they will flock to buy them. I almost fell like stuffing my borked 500A into the 500AX box and let BestBuy eat the loss.

Oh and I bought the original DRU500A online so I get to deal with the non existent Sony support.

If you could pull that off, make sure you pay cash or Best Buy will bust your nuts big time.

There are serial numbers that are on the sticker of the DVD Burners and they match those of the ones on the DVD BOX. If you shoved your DRU500A in the box, they'd see the serial number of the sticker didn't match the serial number on the box, so it's doubtful you could pull that one off.

If you paid cash, it might be worth a shot, but then once they busted your ass, they'd probably tell you to keep your shady ass out of their store. I thought Sony burners sucked though? What would make you purchase another Sony burner after you have tried to bash them on every thread?

    That seems real weird.

As far as your issue with the reporting of a DRU500a, read my last post on the thread above this one. I responded to someone else asking the same thing.

  21. I have about 90 DVD+R media and I also have two computers with burners of which one I built just for video work. Now I also ordered the $163 4x NEC DVD+R burner just as a backup in case the new Sony fails plus it also makes that computer dual format ready. What makes you think I will keep the Sony? I have 30 days to return it to BestBuy.

I didn't say you weren't going to return it, but if that is your method..to try and get 30 days of free burning with the Sony Burner, that doesn't make any sense.

Why would you shell out $350 for the SONY burner when you can get a HP or a Pioneer burner at Office Depot or Computer City much cheaper? If you were gonna return the burner, wouldn't you want to spend "less" cash, while getting what's in your mind a better "burner" with a Pioneer? Just trying to understand your thought process.

Err I ordered a 4x DVD+R burner for $100 less than any burner BestBuy had to offer but it won't be here for a week meanwhile I have work to get done thats both DVD+R and DVD-R.

  24. I see, so it was "rent a burner" time..lol...ok.....I see...Bob, you haven't mentioned where you originally purchased that Sony DRU500a..can you tell me where you purchased the burner and how much you paid? I'm just curious.

    Thanks

  26. Damn...so you weren't able to jump in on that $50 rebate huh? I purchased the DRU500a and got it brand new for $330. Then I got in on that $50 rebate which I just got which brings the drive down to $280. I sold the drive for what paid and purchased the DRU500AX for the same price. Basically, I now have the DRU500AX for $280. Considering i've had nothing but flawless burns from both of the drives, I really think I got a steal. Unbelievable drive for an incredible price.

The X refers to the supplied software coming on a DVD disk and nothing to do with the burner it's self
