  1. I'm currently about to return a Hauppauge pvr-350 for the simple reason that it doesn't work on windows 2000.

Every time I start winTV2000(the software that came with this card) it runs for a bit and then either looses the sound or locks up completly. After a couple of emails to Hauppauge support (who are quite helpful at least in the UK they are) we managed to nail the problem down.

    Read all about ACPI here
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;252420

Essentially the PVR-350 doesn't liike this arrangement of sharing an IRQ with another device in my case it is sharing IRQ 11 with:

    My 3D Prophet Graphics Card
    VIA PCI Audio Controller (WDM)
and 2 VIA USB Universal Host Controllers

I have tried moving the PVR to every other PCI slot several times all the possible combinations of BIOS settings, but Windows 2000 just overrides everything and puts it back on IRQ11.

The only option left to me is to remove ACPI support from my PC which is supposed to be a lengthy process, can result in all sorts of other system errors and data loss. So I'm not prepared to do that.

While I hope this helps anyone else that is having similar problems and is wondering what the *%$£ is wrong (It's taken me a few weeks to narrow down the problem)
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO ASK FOR HELP!!

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Does anyone know of a good capture card that has more robust architecture/drivers than the PVR-350 and can deal with sharing an IRQ under a win2000 ACPI system?

It needs to be tried and tested under the above conditions.

I mainly want it to capture from my s-vhs camcorder and also create mpegs from other movie files as TMPGEnc takes too long (does the header trick only work with TMPGEnc or can I encode XVCD with
    a hardware solution?

    Thank you

  2. I'm going to try the Adaptec Videoh PCI.
Hopefull this device will not have the same problem.
And if it does I'll just get the USB version.

DOES ANYONE KNOW THE DIFFERENCE IN TRANSFER TIMES BETWEEN A PCI AND A USB CARD PLEASE?

  3. Yucks.

It would be better to stick to the PVR. Video capture cards generally do not like to share an IRQ with other stuff. Should you not like this arrangement, the only option is to go for an external based cap card.

  4. Hi Teleport,
Did you try installing windows 2000 as a "standard p.c."?

    Selecting a HAL During Setup
During the first phase of Setup, at the Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration screen, press the F5 key.
Click the appropriate HAL, or click Other to specify a third-party HAL. The available HALs include:

    ACPI Multiprocessor PC
    ACPI Uniprocessor PC
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC
Compaq SystemPro Multiprocessor or 100% Compatible
    MPS Uniprocessor PC
    MPS Multiprocessor PC
    Standard PC
    Standard PC with C-Step i486
    Other
Continue with Setup to complete the installation.

So you select Standard PC and it should work fine, if not in bios select non plug and play operating system and select a irq for that pci slot. I hope this may help you. If you want to return that board, may I suggest a Canopus MVR-1000 or DVStorm, I have a DVStorm and it works GREAT!!

  5. Thanks Steve,

I have seen those instructions on the MS website but I don't really want to have to format and reinstall Windows 2000. Plus ACPI is there for a reason right?

As for the cards you have suggested, will these also suffer the same IRQ sharing problems?

Just out of curiosity what is a Standard PC with C-Step i486 HAL?
