Hi all,
I am wondering if an external DVD burner (particularly USB2 external DVD burner) will do the same job as the same brand internal DVD burner? I mainly back up DVDs by different methods and then burn them on DVD-Rs. Please advise if there is any disadvantages of having external DVD burners such as Pioneer USB2 external DVD burner. Thanks.

The only disadvantage I can think of is the price. Other than that, both are equally adept at backing up DVDs. personally I don't think shelling out extra $80 for an external version of the same brand/model is worth it.

Usually the external units are the same drives as the internal so there really isn't any difference. I have a Lacie that is both USB 2.0 and also Firewire that I use without troubles on two computers.

When purchasing a DVD burner, I shelled out the extra 80 bucks for the External Sony DRX-500UL. I am very pleased with the burner and it has never failed me yet.
The ease of installation (expecially with XP) is great. Just plug it into a firewire or USB 2.0 and you are done... If you ever upgrade or want to use it on another computer, just unplug it and move it...Use what works for you... -
I have the Sony External DVD burner (DRX-500ULX) and have no complaints with performance or reliability.Great burner.
