TMPG encoder question

recently, while trying to encode either avi or mov to mpeg,
on the preveiw all I get is a black screen, no picture or sound.
I am using version 12j.

any help or suggestions welcomed.

If you use 2pass variable length encoding, you will see a blank frame until encoding reaches the 50% mark. After that, you will see the video. Also, in the menu under "Option | Preview option..." if you choose "do not display," you will only see a black frame.
