Man, this is coming along nicely. I can't wait to put Real PC back on the shelf where it belongs.

I havent tried it yet, but there is a freeware program out there called DVDShrink that apparently is similar to DVD2One. For those of you who would like to see the capabilities of a program like DVD2One, but don't want to fool around with the hacked version, try this.
Whip out your copy of Virtual PC and give DVDShrink a go. http://www.dvdr-digest.com/software/software.php?file=dvdshrink
I didn't want to create yet another topic in the Mac forum about a PC program, so I decided to post here. -
I tried DVDShrink on VPC 5 with a Pal disc of "As good as it gets", reducing it from ca. 7 GB to fitting on a DVD-R. The result was very bad, I must say. No competition for dvd2one IMO.

I just gave it a go myself on a short clip. This program actually compresses, the results are obvious. The output files as examined by MPEG Info X shows just how much it chunks out.
My results, though, were actually acceptable on the Level 1 compression ... I could live it it, but not on a DVD-9 packed full like these TV series DVD's. The Level 4 compression took it down to sub-SVCD bitrates and it just looked gross.
Keep in mind, DVD2one output on SVCD type bitrates looks just as gross. I like the options DVD Shrink has, though. The developer of DVD2one for PC says version 2 will incorporate DVD Shrink style options. I wouldn't look for any of that in the Mac OS X version that they're working on.
DVD Shrink sure is priced right, though. Nothing beats a truly free piece of freeware. One post I read says the guy won't even accept donations. I think it's because DVD Shrink will also decrypt a DVD (although leaving in Macrovision). -
I just tried DVDShrink using the type 4 compression (around 40%) since my test DVD is a 7.4 GB disc.
I decided to duplicate the DVD without removing anything... just to see the result and it wasn't bad.Actually after reading some post it was better than I was expecting.
So if DVD2ONE is even better than DVDShrink and (mainly) if it's coming to OS X as I've said before... I can hardly wait!!

After a more carefull check of my DVD converted with DVDShrink i notice that:
- The movie itself is good. Well at least good enough for someone used to VHS quality.
- The extras are WAY pixelated. Probably DVDShrink uses different compressions for the main part and the extras.
Oh, one more thing:
It took me 40 mins to copy the DVD to the hard drive using OSeX (DVD Backup gave me an error). I know i could use DVDShrink to do that but I wanted to use Mac software as much as I could.
DVDShrink took 1h and 10 mins to re-compress the DVD.
Finally to copy to a DVD-RW i wasted another hour or so! (I know, DVD-R would take me 20 mins but i don't like to waste them on my tests).
Conclusion: ~3 hours to make a copy of that DVD... I WANT MY LIFE BACK!! :jester:
There! Feeling better know! :P
Anyway, just wanted to give some feedback.

I tried to use DVD Shrink and get an error "unhandled exceptio OnIdleFile"..
The steps I took are as follows:
rip Osex
make image Sizzle
Mount image in VPC 6 using Deamon Tools
Select dick in DVD shrink
compression level 1
Do you know why this is happening?
Thanks for any help! -
Why make an image? DVD Shrink takes files in a folder, which is what you should have when 0Sex or DVD Backup is done.
I'm not sure why there are errors. It may be the OS you're using in your emulator. Since Windows 2000 causes my emulator to drag to a crawl, I use Windows ME, and it works brilliantly.
My quick test of DVD Shrink yesterday yielded results I thought were quite good. Once I got home last night, I did more work with it.
This thing gives you a lot of options on how much, if any, to compress, and what parts of the DVD get compressed and to what ratio. DVD2one does not yet give you any of these options. I tried some parts of a DVD and told it compress at Level 4: this resulted in a 2 Mbps compression, which isn't even good quality for SVCD. At full DVD resolution, 2 Mbps bitrate looks crap so I would never recommend using Level 4 compression, unless its a still menu.
I tried customizing the compression on a disk, telling it to not compress the movie at all, and various ranges of compression on the extras. This worked brilliantly, with results equal to DVD2one.
The interface isn't really intuitive, as it will pretty much let you do anything and everything to a DVD. Although the DVD2one interface is less complex, I appreciate the option, should I choose, to personally tweak my backup.
As for speed, I found it much faster in my emulator than DVD2one is. Dunno why that is. Once when the monitor went to sleep, the program errored out when it was remapping the VOBs. That was easily solved. -
Okay, no image, select Video_TS.ifo file... start to encode and around 500 Mb the app crashes. Why?
Running Windows XP Pro, 160 mb ram allocated and set the monitor to never shut of and set screen saver to never come on.
BTW i'm NTSC...
Any ideas? Is anyone else having this problem... -
I've used DVDShrink on a emulator with Win98.
Select folder created by OSeX.
Compress.
Wait.... and wait... (check my other posts here)
Worked fine.
Maybe Win 2000 or XP are not good for emulation.

Thanks for the help,
got it running on, get this, "windows 95"ugh, that's all I had access to..

Hello again!
Is it to soon to ask how's the port of DVD2ONE going?
I'm really curious to see it in action. :P
Thanks!
Pepe -
For that you'll have to inquire into the DVD2one forum for the Mac port at www.dvd2one.com ... The European developers never come here.
-
if your looking for compressing mpeg2s (I think thats what dvd2one does) try this:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10626
I hope that tool can help(Or maybe I'm just being dumb again.....)
-
Minx, doesn't work properly with NTSC DVDs. Your audio will be out of synch. Also from what I've read from users DVD2ONE resolution for doing just the main movie track is superior to anything else out there. I've tried Minx on just about every NTSC DVD I own and none of them are in synch. DVD2ONE is just what we need for the Mac community.
-
Funny, 'coz I've tried Minx with my Matrix R1 NTSC DVD and it syncs perfectly.
-
what about bitvice? I've never used it so I don't know how well it can perform. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/8055
Also can't you use MissingMpegEdit to adjust the sync?
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10854
PS. With DVD2One/Minx/Bitvice can you convert SVCD mpeg2s into a smaller file?
