This is by far my favorite post to date on this topic:

    I especially like this part:

While this was forgivable in the early days on the grounds that these files were to be viewed on PCs most of the time, this is no longer the case and they should have got their shit together by now. <snip>

Here is a mini-guide to using FitCD ---> CLICK HERE

That guide was written with the intent of going from MPEG-4 to DVD but I think the guide makes FitCD easy enough to understand that you can easily adapt it for other uses, i.e., DVD Rip to DVD etc.

Well it is true that Lucio Fulci made some great films but he was also very inconsistent which I suppose is a nice way of saying, "he made some really great films and some really bad films not to mention a few in-between".

AENIGMA does have a trace of that Fulci 80's touch to it ... the early-to-mid 80's being his period of excessiveness in terms of ultra violence. For instance the AENIGMA "rape by snails" scene could have easily been in his masterpiece THE BEYOND which features a cool scene in a somewhat similar vein but with large tarantulas ... but despite that one moment and the familiar face of actor Jared Martin even the hardcore Fulci fan must admit that AENIGMA is ultimately a failure and definitely a bad movie.

I'm using a VLC player to watch a series, but the subtitle files it came with sometimes cut out. Is there another player that would show them more consistently?

  6. Typically you'll have the option to view a safe area in your editing programs preview monitor. Keep subtitles and anything you don't want to lose in this area. It won't be long before every TV is HD and overscanning will be a thing of the past. I have a screenshot of a safe area in Vegas Video here: http://dvmoviemakers.blogspot.com/2007/11/tv-cropping.html

    PREVENT TV OVERSCAN (Alternative)
    ================================================== ==========================================
    requirements : SDTV (non HD)
this is not meant to conflict with others like FITCD,or overscan ruler,
    but just an alternative
    #tools : - MPEG encoder
    - DVD author
    - DVD writer,DVD-R disc,DVD-RW disc
the key is to resize the video savely so theres no more cropping/overscan...
    1. let's say you have video with these specs:
    resolution : 512 x 388
    video system : NTSC
    .......................
    .......................
    2. use this "640 formula"* :
    *THE 640 FORMULA*
    512 640 ---------------------------------------------------------------
    --- = --- based on TMPGEnc 640x480 resolution resize feature .
388 y I use the 640 only since video resolution are various.
in order to keep the video aspect ratio, the "y" factor
y = 485 must be determined by using the input video resolution
    as a reference
    ---------------------------------------------------------------
the resized result would be 640x485 (for NTSC DVD)
==>>if you are about to author PAL DVD,add "48" to your resulted "y"(y + 48)
48 is half of 96. 96 resulted from PAL DVD y resolution subsracted with
    NTSC DVD y resolution (576 - 480 = 96).
    3. use this resolution on your MPEG Encoder to create MPEG2 DVD Compliant.black border will
be added to your resulted DVD resolution. In fact, your SDTV will zoom them automatically
so you can watch normally like the video input.
    4. then you'll be ready to process your MPEG2 DVD compliant video with your DVD author.
    5. if you had soft sub, adjust the position as it will visible on your SDTV (most DVD author
have "view save area" feature).but if it is already hardsubbed, don't worry.just make sure that
the hardsub does not out of save area.
    6. burn the DVD,play and see what happen on your SDTV.
    7. if you are unsure, burn in DVD-RW disc first.
    8. hope that the PREVENT OVERSCAN works.......(99%-100% works)
#NOTE#this method also apply to smaller DVD resolution like 352x240.This time change "the 640"
    to "320" and all done.
    ================================================== =======================================
    - SDTV (non HD) is GOOD FOR VIEWING NON HD MATERIAL,STANDARD TV BROADCAST,LOW RES VIDEO
    - HDTV MAINLY USED FOR HD SATELLITE BROADCAST,BLUE RAY DVD,UNCOMPRESSED VIDEO
    - I LIKE BOTH AND I DON'T PLAN TO LEAVE SDTV

I'M SO SORRY, SOMETHING WRONG WRITTEN ABOUT THE FORMULA
    HERE IS THE CORRECTION..................
    use this "640 formula"* :

    512 640
    --- = ---
    388 y

    y = 485

    THE 640 FORMULA
    ---------------------------------------------------------
based on TMPGEnc 640x480 resolution resize feature .
I use the 640 only since video cannot treated the same.
in order to keep the video aspect ratio, the "y" factor
must be determined by using the input video resolution
    as a reference
    ---------------------------------------------------------
