My first computer was the old Radio Shack TRS.
I remember the owner's manual, and how I tried to learn
to code to get the thing to perform a simple task.

What I remember was codes like go-to and go-sub. I think
    it was Basic programming.

I returned the computer to the store because I didn't see
any reason to learn all of that silly coding!

Well, what if I would have stuck with it? Oh well.

    So, do you code?

edit... This probably should include ALL types of coding....
Writing programs, html, phb, games, etc.

If this belongs in the computer forum please move it there!

You have a forum so do you occasionally need to modify
    the code, or rewrite it?

Oh that kind of coding. Well sort of. But these days the "mods" are pretty much cut and paste so its not like I have to spend much time doing it.

I do a lot of code editing, and I hate it. I cannot write much from scratch. ASP, PHP, HTML, CGI, PERL

In the "old days" I wrote a lot of BAT and QBASIC files.

I was going to include a "hate it" option in the poll
but I didn't think anybody would choose it!

I remember learning assembly language on my Commodore64 back in the day, (I even had a small program published in 'Run' magazine, even though they spelled my name wrong.) For a while I did some early C programming in connection with HyperAccess scripting, but when they abandoned C to go to VB I went too. Most of what I do these days is in VB, but I don't do as much as I used to.

Yes, mostly specialized transportation engineering applications - generally fairly small but the odd one is a little more involved.

Mostly AutoLISP but also code in VB and rarely VC++.

It seems like such a long time ago ... but I was the BASIC programming instructor for my Commodore user group. During that time, I created my own word-processor (The Write Stuff) that preformatted text to be printed in submission format per Writer's Digest guidelines. And somehow, it made it out to a few colleges. Got a good customer review once from a student in Georgia (grin).

But over time, I got lazy. It was far easier to be a "user" than a "programmer" and I had other things to do with my time.

For work and play I currently do HTML, ASP, VBScript, Javascript, PHP, VB & DOS Batch files.

Have learnt C and C++ but haven't used it since university.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Dabbled with Pilot, assembly, ratfor.
DOS (batch files) and a bit of HTML are all I use now.

ASP/VB mainly, with a dash of java

  16. I've done some HTML and recently tinkered with some XML. We have a new PC at work running a Microsoft RMS register system. Everything is in XML and they charge $125 per call for help with it. I can see myself learning much more XML in the future.

I code for hobby and for work.
VB, C, Assembly, and various forms of Basic.

Hardware design for me is mainly writing code also. Strikingly similar to software design. The code gets compiled and downloaded into a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). Very cool. Hardware modifications are done with a mouse and an editor instead of a soldering iron or wire wrap gun.

ASP.net, old ASP, C#, VB, SQL, VBScript, Java, JavaScript for a living (and for fun!). Back in the days, I was king of 6502 assembly (later 68000 assembly) - And of course S.T.O.S. during the Atari ST era. There's nothing better to learn how a computer works than assembly programming.

I said no but I do know HTML ... at least I did ... been using FrontPage for so long I kinda would be lost doing some complicated stuff.

But I still know it well enough to make manual changes when I need it.

I did BASIC back on a C-64 but does that even count?

So far the results of the poll are unusual.
I thought there would be a LOT more people who
do code instead of those who don't. But the votes
    are almost even.

And then there are all of those people who voted
    for the 5th choice!

    Smartypants!
