  1. This morning I tried to burn a video folder with DeepBurner Pro. But It gave me a message: "Medium capacity is not enough (0 bytes available, 1.67 Gb required). Please insert more capacious disc." Yet this was a brand new unused DVD+RW. I then used Nero Express which burned it with no fuss. Then I tried DeepBurner Pro again - and this time it burned OK!

What could have caused this odd behaviour please? I'm keen to resolve it, because I've had that message about insufficient space before, in similar terms, from various other burning programs too. And I've regarded it as a media problem. But this morning's incident has got me really puzzled.

    (Disclaimer) I'm not an expert.

But, my guess is that your DVD burner (or non-Nero software) is dependent on a driver file that is not autoloaded at startup ... that it's only loaded after Nero has been loaded. While I'm not sure if this is the case, I suspect that if you first opened Nero then closed it, your other burner software would no longer present you this problem "during the same bootup." And if you could find out what driver your other software is looking for and incorporate it into your startup routine, the problem would go away permanently.

  3. Thanks. I'll look closely at that possibilty. I do know that, apart fom the issue here, I'm getting a variety of erratic behaviour.

  4. Alec: You're too modest - you're a star in my book! Your diagnosis looks spot on. A couple of DVDs (one -RW, one +RW) that I'd burned with Nero Express were weirdly refusing even to be recognized. And sometimes locking up my system. But if I start Nero Express, choose Burn DVD Video, and then insert the discs, they now initiate autoplay and play the DVD. Similarly, I can now use Nero Info on them and get a result, instead of just 'No disc inserted'.

Tonight I'll get back on the case and see what I can do about fixing this. Anyone else had such behaviour please?

Could it be anything to do with fact that I had an error reported that my 'ASPI layer' was corrupted and I had to fix this with a program called Force ASPI?

Is there maybe something I could re-install to try fixing it?

One thing;s for sure: there's no use my emailing Nero Support; they've not answered anything I've sent in the last year.

Try this page. But (healthy paranoia), after you download the "Force ASPI" utility, be sure to run your antivirus program before launching it:

And, be sure to read the "use at your own risk" disclaimer (grin).

  6. Thanks. I see now that I was a bit ambiguous in my wording. I had already installed and run Force ASPI, apparently successfully. The associated tool I also installed, CheckASPI, confirms my ASPI is in good shape. FWIW (mostly incomprehensible to me), it displays this info:

    Component Version Date Size
    WNASPI32.DLL 4.60 (1021) 09/10/99 45056
    WINASPI.DLL 4.60 (1021) 09/10/99 5600
    ASPI32.SYS 4.60 (1021) 09/10/99 25244
    WOWPOST.EXE 4.60 (1021) 09/10/99 4672

ASPI is properly installed and is fully operational.
A total of 6 host adapters have been detected.
    ---------

What I meant was: could this bizarre issue be a negative side effect of installing and running Force ASPI? But on reflection that seems unlikley.

I'm at a loss now to know how to isolate the missing file(s). I suppose one fairly obvious thing I could do would be to put Nero.exe into my Win XP Startup folder, and close Nero Express manually immediately after a reboot. But that's untidy, and anyway I hate unresolved puzzles!

I see something called NeroFilterCheck (C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe) is running at startup; I wonder if that has a bearing. (I'd have been happy to discover it had somehow been disabled!)

I'd also consider re-installing the Nero 6 OEM suite on the CD that came with my DVD drive a year ago. But I've updated it with various downloads since then and am not sure I'd be able to repeat all that reliably. Is there maybe a current, robust Nero 6 setup program I could try (after doing a System Restore checkpoint)?

Any other ideas from anyone would be much appreciated please.
