I've been using Ritek 4X DVD-R's for several years now. Lately it seems no one is distributing them anymore. All I can find are the white top printable ones in the 4X speed. Everything else is the newer G05 8X stuff which don't work in my burner, I don't care for the faster media because I ONLY burn at 1X anyway.

Does anyone know who still carries the Ritek silver top 4X DVD-R's?

Ritek was never a good disc. G04 production ended in 2004. Buy a new burner, they only cost like $40.

Sorry, I am in the United States.

I have burned 4000 Riteks with a 99.9% success rate. They seem like a good disk to me. If they are unavaileble now then I'll be looking for a good substitute. Are all manufactures dropping the 4x media? I hope not.

Why buy a new burner when mine is great. Besides, I have a requirement to burn at 1x and most new burner software doesn't support 1x. The slowest they seem to burn is 4x.

  6. Ritek G04 media was always excellent for me on my Sony 510a burner.
I used to buy them from Meritline.com and they still carry them.

I just checked and the silver top's are discontinued at Meritline. In fact, I searched the internet and could not come up with a website that sells them anymore.

I am now in a search for a quality silver top 4x DVD-R with good price.

The silver top ritek 4x were exellent discs...I never had a problem with them. The Ridata/Ritek 8x is as high as I would go now on Ritek media....above 8x on Ritek have been pretty crappy to my burners.
The best silver top I buy now are Taiyo Yuden BUT...I haven't seen 4x for a while....mine are 8x.

Sounds like you're out of luck then. Forget about 4x, the manufacturers are moving away from 8x to 16x even now. There's no good reason to burn at 1x anyway. If burning at 4x or 8x isn't working then there's a problem with the discs, the burner, or both.

  10. upgrade the firmware of the dvd drive you have, failing that, get a new burner as stated above.

I have a Sony DRU-500A internal DVD burner. I have had very good success with it with all types of burning (movies, games, etc...).

I say a 1x burn speed is required for making perfect PS2 game backups. Anything faster can result in a coaster but not always. Even movie backups burned at speeds faster then 1x can cause intermittent freezes on a burned DVD. Burning at 1x has ALWAYS provided me with a very nice backup no matter what. I have always used Ritek 4x with great success.
Slow and stead wins the race. I can't see a need for fast burning really. You'd need a very fast PC to burn at 16x anyway and that still would be questionable. Still, maybe it is time to upgrade my burner to take advantage of the newer media coming out.

I haven't had problems burning movies at 16x personally. Either way, you're probably going to need a new burner as you said. Keep in mind too that the faster media often don't burn as well at lower speeds, so if you decide on a 16x burner and get 16x discs, I wouldn't burn any slower than 8x. They don't seem to be tuned for CLV speeds (1x, 2, 2.4x, 4x, 6x).

Sorry - I guess I missed the fact that they did not actually have any 4x media. I'm glad I kept a 50 stack of G04 in case I ever want to do anything with my retired Sony 510a.

It may be time for you to look into a new burner. I think I paid $40 for my oem Benq 1620 - and it is far better than my Sony drive ever was and will burn to most anything with consistently good results.

I had a similar situation with my Sony 510a, which is why I also became such a fan of Ritek G04 media. That same Sony 510a will not burn to G05 media under any circumstances. This is due to Sony's typically atrocious customer support - they have no interest in providing updated firmware to burn to newer media formulations. However, I have been really glad I replaced it - and did not buy another Sony. My Benq 1620 has been terrific.

    How about Taiyo Yuden 4X-R's

  16. The 4x Ritek gave me excellent burns. That was the sole reason I bought some 8x Ritek. But those were junks, the burns were ok, just that they became usable as time went by.

Now I exclusively use TY media.

Those discs are more than likely TYG02 (8x) or TYG03 (16x). They're not considered by TY to be "Premium" quality so they only certify them at 4x, but I wouldn NOT buy those for a 4x burner.

So as time went by ... they got better and better ... hmmm ... that is unusual ... usually they become unusable

But to get back on track ... one factor I like about shiny DVD disks ... is the ability to write on them with a permanent marker and if I goof up ... I can wipe it off with an alcohol based liquid ... perfume ... colonge ... etc ... but some of these new disks have an opaque rough surface and wont wipe off very well .... those low cost TY disks ... work well

Yeah, that was a spelling mistake. LOL! It should be unusable.
