yet again I have strolled across a thread at VH with a Grammarian (definition link) posting a reply containing nothing more than a gripe about spelling/grammar.
It's amusing that people feel the need to correct others instead of just overlooking it. If they can't resist the urge to correct someone then why not do it politely or at least respectfullyand maybe even also offer something topic related?
I crossed paths with a Grammarian last week (not this site) as I couldn't resist pointing out that his 'correction' reply actually contained mistakes. Not surprisingly they came back insisting I was wrong along with some other immature rubbish regarding my post. They even resorted to bringing my user name into it (yet another scraping the bottom of the barrel level of posting) to attempt to claim back some 'cool' factor. My second reply which pointed out in more detail why they were incorrect in the first place, along with a few more corrections such as the word username doesn't actually exist, was met with silence. Yeah I know I was a Grammarian also but I feel that it shouldn't be done in the first place and I just wanted to give that person a taste of what they have been dishing out. Judging from the response, I'm hoping that person may think twice about the manner they 'jump' on someone simply because of spelling/grammar issues they can't overlook.
If people don't like it then simply move along to the next thread. Is it really that hard to ignore or do you feel the need to attempt to look superior?
I know people may jokingly reply to this gripe of mine (although VHOT is quiet these days) but don't give me the usual bullshit response such as "they should at least attempt" or "is it that hard?" blah blah blah.. It also doesn't take a lot of effort to point out to someone that their spelling/grammar isn't up to scratch without flaming the poster but some fail to do it for whatever reasons. I do honestly think some people must feel inferior in 'real' life so they have to compensate by trying to look superior online
.
I guess I missed that part in Rules for Videohelp forums that all posts must be at least to the standard of the Queen's English.
p.s. for those that can't resist the urge, feel free to rip this post apart for spelling/grammar mistakes and impress us all. Just make sure your reply is 100% correct :P

Television was a great invention. It provided entertainment and news.
Eventually TV turned into a wasteland of sewage (my opinion).
The internet was a great invention. It provided entertainment, news,
learning, etc. Unfortunately it has also turned into a partial wasteland (my opinion).
When a person knows how to spell, but doesn't take the time to spell correctly,
they are simply being lazy. That's their option. However, if a person is scolded
for correcting somebody's spelling, that's a direct hit in the face of humanity. After all,
humans are supposed to strive to be the best they can. Bet nobody knew that!!!
The internet has given people a reason to slack off and that also carries over into
their real life, and that in turn rubs off onto others, which takes the population down
the toilet.
The damage is already done. I've watched it happening since the late 60's. Today ALL ages
and people of ALL educations slack off and don't care about anything.
People from a different country, of course, will have a harder time to spell correctly.
So Mack, as u can c, da publik has gon down da tubes and aint no way to
bring dem bak again..... no wat im sayin homz?

I often get annoyed at the people who feel the need to correct grammar. I mean, seriously, most of us don't proofread our posts. Simply because I typed in "teecher" incorrectly doesn't make me an idiot. I just typed very quickly and hit submit. You got the jist of what I was saying, so why the need to point out the error and laugh at me?
I agree, it's sillly. (haha) -

The 'correct' way of spelling a word is only defined by the amount of people who agree on how to spell it anyway.
The question, "How do you spell parallel ?" is different from "What is the corrrect spelling of parallel ?" The first question I can answer and be right, no matter how I spell it as long as I am honest, but the second answer may be more difficult, depending on the word, and whether or not I actually do know the correct spelling.
As for the people who wade in to correct what they consider to be bad spelling, I wonder if it really matters. Chances are it is not relevant to the original subject matter of the post, and I for one am not bothered as long as I understand what is meant.

I like to think of a forum more analogous to spoken language than written. We speak with friends using much more colourful language than you would ever use when writing formally - spelling is not important as long as you get your point across.
Funny enough, I do try to spell check as it's just one click with Google Toolbar... More out of habit than anything else... -
Personally I never knew your grammar I'm sure she was a nice old lady but man do you ever write lousy.

If it is the thread I'm thinking of, then I'm with the grammarian.
Text message English has no place on a technical forumRegards,

Just to add to what ShelbyGt wrote some might be in the same boat as me, I can't type...
I have to proof it after I type it which is a PITA. Why after all these years I haven't learned how I don't know but I have to look at the keyboard. Spelling mistakes are easy to make... Spellchecker is great but I forget to use it some times.

I think there are two reasons to correct someone's grammar or spelling.
1: To feel superior.
2: To help the person improve their communication skills.
Unfortunately, most of the "corrections" I see here fall into the former category, but the correct attitude can accept them as the latter."Shut up Wesley!" -- Captain Jean-Luc Picard
