I have some video's I'd like to convert to mpeg4 so I can place them in iMovie and put them on DVD. I drop the .rm file into ffmpegx and after awhile it shows up. I then set the preferences and click "Encode", but the encoding is really quick and produces a file that doesn't work......here is the info on noe of the .rm's

FFmpeg version CVS, Copyright (c) 2000-2004 Fabrice Bellard
Mac OSX universal build for ffmpegX
    libavutil version: 49.0.0
    libavcodec version: 51.9.0
    libavformat version: 50.4.0
    [NULL @ 0x54340c]Unsupported video codec
    Thu Jan 11 00:11:59 EST 2007
    ications/udbz001.rm':
    Duration: 00:20:47.0, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 233 kb/s
    Stream #0.0: Audio: cook, 22050 Hz, stereo, 20 kb/s
    Stream #0.1, 12.00 fps(r): Video: RV40 / 0x30345652, 320x240, 207 kb/s
    Stream #0.2: Data: 0x0000
Codec type mismatch for mapping #0.0 -> #0.0

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but when I click play in ffmpegx, I hear the sound of the video but for some reason mplayer does not open up to show the video. I'm running on a Mac OSX 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Any help would be greatly appreciated.....really want to get these vids on DVD.
I once was blind, but now I just look away.

First be sure to have an Intel version of the Real codecs installed in the "ffmpegX" folder in "Application Support".

Then try the "Invert mapping " option as your file seems to have the audio track coming first instead of the video track.

You have to download them on the mplayer main website. Scroll down to the "Binary Codec Package" section and download the package "Mac OS X x86 20060611".

Inside the zip file you'll find the installer for mplayer, that means it will install the files in usr/local/lib. Open the installer and proceed with the installation.

Under the finder choose "Go to folder..." in the "Go" menu. Type usr/local/lib and press return. This will open a new window where you will find the "codecs" folder containing the Real binaries. Copy this folder in Library/Application Support/ffmpegX and rename it "reallib". That should make it..

I downloaded the codec pack but can't find the usr/local/lib folder. I didn't open the zip file, I just followed the Installation and now I have no idea where it installed it to. Thanks for responding so quick.

I assume the .zip has been automatically decoded by Safari at then end of the download. As for the "codecs" folder, you can't "find" it just by browsing or using Spotlight. It's an invisible Unix folder. The only way to access its content is to use the "Go to folder..." command in the "Go" menu, then type "/usr/local/lib/" (I forgot the initial slash in my previous message).

You can *only* transcode Realmedia files when using mencoder based settings/presets, not ffmpeg settings/presets.

    Hello!

I tried your steps, I could install the package, but I can't find the "usr/local/lib" on my computer. I have a french version. I tried to change the "usr" by my name, the "lib" by bibliothèque, but no chance.
I even tried with spotlight, I tried to look for "codec" folder, no chance.
    Any help?
Because until now, FFmpgX says my ".rm" files are invalide....

    Thanks!
    Olivier

The folders are called "usr", "local", and "lib" no matter the language of your system. These Unix folders are normally invisible to the user (even with Spotlight). They are completely different elements from the regular "Users" and "Library" folders. To access this path, you have to type exactly "/usr/local/lib" using the "Go>Go to folder..." menu item.

Hi, um, this is my first time using FFmpegx, and when i first dragged a .rm into the application, ffmpeg would just freeze. So I did what you said above with the codecs. Now it doesn't freeze but it says failed. I'm completely ignorant and have no idea how to get mencoder based presets. Please enlighten me.

nevermind, i think i get it.

    Yay, it worked. Thank you!

Thanks for your answer (merci pour votre réponse, mais je continue en anglais pour les autres lecteurs du forum), I followed your steps and it went fine, but when trying to place a .rm file on the "source", it says "non lisible". (unable to read).
    What's the next step, then?
    Thanks for your help!
When it works, i garantee pay for the shareware!

The entire file path and filename mustn't have any special character (quotation marks, brackets, etc...)

That's the case: no accent, no sign, nothing. Just a normal video file, .rm type. The name is victor.rm and the information says it's a realplayer media file, 73 Mo on the hard drive.
    But it says "non lisible"....

First try with a sample .rm clip in order to check if it's a probleme specific to your own video, or if it's a general problem. Put the file on the Desktop before trying to process it with ffmpegX.
If you still get the "unable to read" message, then there is probably a problem with your installation of the Real codec package.
-> check that you have installed the correct version on the binary package (Intel in your cas)
-> check that you have an Universal version of ffmpegX (via the Get info window in the Finder)
-> Check that you made a copy of the "codecs" folder in "Library/Application Support/ffmpegX" (this is the general Library folder, not the Library folder in you User folder)
-> check if you correctly renamed this copy as reallib with two L
-> make sure that ffmpegX is located in your "Applications" folder, and not nested in any sub-folder.

Thanks! It worked! Well, it worked... At least draging the .rm file onto the desktop.
Because after that, I tried all encoding combinations possible, but none seems to work...

When you say "You can *only* transcode Realmedia files when using mencoder based settings/presets, not ffmpeg settings/presets", where do you find such presets? And how do you upload them?

In the "Résumé"/"Summary" tab, on the left, you have three fields "format destination"/"output format" (or something like that). In the first field, you can click on the little black triangle ("Réglage rapide") and you will see an array of presets : if you're using these quick settings to do the conversion you can only use a preset using mencoder. These "presets" are included with ffmpegX, there is nothing to find or to upload.

When I'm talking about "settings", I'm talking about the setting of the "video codec" in the "Video" tab, when you are manually fine-tuning the settings (which is the method I usually prefer). But here again, there is nothing to upload, I'm just talking about the choice of the video codec which has to be mencoder based.

It worked ? You mean you actually succeded in having ffmpegX identifying the Real files ? If identfication is OK, but the conversion fails, what is the error message reported
    1/ by ffmpegX progress
2/ by the terminal if you check the option "open a terminal window" in ffmpegX

Ok, it's all right! Thanks to your informations, I could successfully do it under the "video" tab, while under the "resume" tab, it wasn't ok... Thanks for your help, I'll go and buy this software!
