I have an NEC ND-2500A writer in my PC and it is running firmware 1.70.
Any suggestions as to where to get an updated firmware? Or am I on the latest?
It's been a long time since I did anything with the drive.
Maybe I'm due for a new one?

  2. You probably mean 1.07 firmware for that model. There ia a newer version (1.0A). Use this link:

    http://www.de.nec.de/softwareoverview2.php/id/557

You'll find it in the left column near the bottom.

Using Neros Infotool, it says firmware 1.70?
Maybe I will just download that version and overwrite it?

    Thanks,

try x-flashing your drive to NEC 2510. I think this firmware is newer than the one you have, it will allow you to do DVD+R bit setting to DVD-ROM, and finally will allow you to burn dial layer media.

    Follow these instructions: https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1367116&highlight=2510#1367116

Keep in mind that these NEC 2xxx drives series are older and I do not think NEC will provide a firmware upgrade to support 16X media. For 8x media, try uploading the firmware in the link.

But not everything is lost. There is a new hack firmware that was developped to support media faster than 8x.

You can read about it in here:

Liggy And Dee NEC ND-2510A Modified Firmware 2A5C Results And Support Thread
    LD2510 Modified ND-2510A Firmware Version 2A5C

    You can download it here

    RIPLOCK removed
    RPC1 Patch
    Full Bitsetting on DVD+R/RW/DL

This firmware is based on Liggy’s 205cbt with full Bitsetting support

    -R media
    RITEK G04 > 8X
    ProdiscS03 > 8X
    MXL RG02 >8X
    Added RITEK F1 @8x

    +R
    All RITEK R03 >8X
    All DAXON AZ2 > 8X
    Prodisc R02 > 8X
    All RICOH JPNR01 > 8X
    CMC MAG F01 > 8X
    All RICOH JPNR 00 > 6X
    MBI PG101R03 > 8X
    Added Ritek R05 @8x

More MIDs will be speeded if there is a demand.

You will need Binflash to flash this firmware. Download Binflash here
I think these guys are fantastic, providing updated firmware to keep alive these older burners. I used to have a NEC 2500@2510 and I would recomed that you use this hack firmware instead of the latest stock one. You will have better result and your drive will be more compatible with current media.

I was not expecting this, but NEC released a new firmware for NEC 2500/2510

This was really a big unexpected event, given that this burner is an older beast. Original firmware has been hack to support Bitsetting

Just use the newer fw 2.0a and for the 2500@2510a.
