From one of my other post I mentioned that I am having trouble getting my videos to play in my DVD player. Title of post was "Quality". I have read all of the "What Is" on the left and am still a bit confused mainly at what is the difference between DVD and SVCD. If my player that I am having trouble with says it is compatable with DVD/VCD/CD does this mean that SVCD is not an option? Since DVD is mpeg2 and SVCD is mpeg2 does that mean that DVD = SVCD and therefore my player which plays DVDs can play SVCD?

Just for more info, I am banging my head trying to figure out why these DVDs I burn won't play in only that player (Phillips DVD825). DVDs that I've burned from movies play fine in that player. I've tried several tools now. I've captured in DV AVI, converted to MPEG2 and burned in which case all of the appropriate files get created. The DVD always play in all my computer DVD players but just not the one mentioned about. Can anyone give me any more advice other than what tools to use and whether or not to use Firewire over USB. I think I need setting changes here. Maybe things need to be just perfect for that player to be compatable.

    Thanks

  2. You did author them with a DVD authoring application??

NO, MPEG2 does not equal DVD, a DVD format is only one form of MPEG2.

When you say "Since DVD is mpeg2 and SVCD is mpeg2 does that mean that DVD = SVCD", no.

White bread is a specific type of bread. If a person wants white bread toast, they do not want rye toast or black bread toast for example. A DVD specificaztion MPEG2 must meet a narrow range of resolutions, butrates, and more to be DVD ready for authoring. Not to mention that you can not just plunk a MPEG2 file on a DVD disc and call it DVD Video. So in one sense your DVD player is picky it wants a proper format DVD Authored disc.

    Good Luck

No necessarily. Some players will play SVCD even though the box/description might not include it. But it the instructions for your player do not include SVCD, and the player does not play SVCDs, then it's a safe bet that it will not.

DVD does not = SVCD. They are both made from mpeg 2 files. They do not organize information the same way. Just because a DVD player will play DVDs (hence the name "DVD player") does not automatically mean it will play SVCDs.

That's really not very clear. First you were asking about SVCD. Is that what you're talking about when you now refer to DVDs?

After you convert the DV AVI to Mpeg 2, what are you doing next? If you're just buring the mpeg file to a DVD you're not creating a DVD that will work in DVD players.

For the most part I've tried several encoding apps to get into the mpeg2 format. I have used Nero to throw a few of these together and burn the DVD. The title folder VIDEO_TS and the appropriate files, .IFO, VOB, etc..., get created. Like I mentioned before, the same files when I use DVD Shrink and Nero to burn a movie from Netflicks. Why the one player chokes is beyond me. What exactly could it be choking on?

I'm added here....So since my player doesn't say SVCD and only DVD I will assume for now that SVCD is out. So for what I have described above, does what I am doing sound like it is the right way for me to create a DVD from my miniDV camcorder? Like I asked, are there settings I need to watch out for when encoding? Is Nero not creating the appropriate .IFO, .VOB etc...files?

Thanks again....everyone here is so very helpful!!!

I think I may understand your question, although it's a little confusing because of the way you worded it. Your standalone DVD player may be refusing to play your DVDs because it doesn't like the media you are using. Try a different brand. Verbatim works well in my Philips DVP-642. Are you using DVD+RW or DVD-RW? Some older players don't like those formats very much.

I don't think that is the case either. I've used both Sony and Maxell DVD-R in that player when I have burned Netflicks movies.

You are in breach of the forum rules and are being issued with a formal warning. No warez please - this includes the copying of rented films.

Also could be using +R in a -R only player. Be sure that your player will play the type of disk (+ or -) that you're using to burn your DVDs.

See my previous post. The DVD825 can only use DVD-Rs. Like I said, no problems before with Maxell or Sony.
