  2. Or what will break .

It probably adds some feature that new new iTunes 6.02 or other iLive 06 apps provide. God forbid that Apple should admit there was a probem with the previous version.

Quicktime 7 is just broken period. MPEG4 (3ivx) videos that played smoothly in QT6 chug along slowly now. The newest update seems to have only made things slightly better when these videos are played in iTunes. Baby steps I guess.

I just can't justify going to OS X Tiger/QT 7 on my home system,
because of little things like that.

And as far as baby steps Ant, your right:
    Pro App Support 3.1
    QT 7.04
    QT Ac3 Component

Whatever happened to the good ol' days when
an update had EVERYTHING you needed and it was
    beta tested EXTENSIVELY?

The 3ivx thing is to do with Core Video. If you use Niceplayer you can select the playback engine, and if you don't use Core Video then 3ivx plays alright.

I have gone over to ffmpegX's MPEG4 implementations, which are just as good in terms of quality or H.264, which is generally better.

But I do agree with you. There are weird anomalies with QT7, where some things will play well and others won't. The processor demand of QT7 is way higher than QT6, too.

As an observation, Goldberg plays everything absolutely perfectly. Go figure.

As I recall, that all changed right around October 1995 when a certain software company released an unfinished product to the retail channels because they had been marketing it with a time-sensitive name for quite awhile. People bought it despite it being incomplete, under-tested and bug-ridden. After that the rest of the big software publishers followed suit releasing software based on marketing dates rather than its completion since it did not appear to have a detrimental affect on sales.

I deleted Goldberg ages ago. Looks like a Spotlight search is called for to find an installer

That Core Video thing is excellent information, thanks! I'll look into Niceplayer. I've been reconverting everything for iPod now anyway via iSquint (older beta version) and basically moving on.

While we all love to make fun of MS and Win95, it's a case of pot-kettle-black. Do you remember when OS X 10.0 was released? Incomplete, un-tested, bug-ridden could all be used to describe that as well!

Mhar: nice catch on the core video 3ivx thing.

    still...
well maybe Apple is getting a clue...they pulled the first
update release of QT 7.04, and replaced it 8 hours later
with a version I hear is better, and didn't cripple many users.

now, if they just pull iTunes 6.02 and get rid of the Adware
that is the mini-store, i'd be happy....

off-topic: You can turn off the mini store .. but my question is when you disable it in Preferences, does it still report back to Apple?

  11. I think it only reports when it's open and when you ae playing a track. And if you'e not connected to the web, it can't do any reporting anytime.

How does one know which "vrsion" of Quictime 7.04 one has?

That is exactly my point. They started the trend (they being MS), now its common practice and will continue to be as long as consumers are willing to pay for unfinished, untested software.

  13. You can disable the ministore in the parental control prefs. Then there is no reporting.

I checked into the two version sof QT 7.04 and couldn't find any mention of it. The version I downloaded as soon as it appeared and the one I donloaded today are identicle, Dec 20 creation date.

iTunes 6.02 however was pulled briefly as a standalone download, although it remained available via software update.

While applications that phone home reak of spyware, the iTunes ministore had one positive report for me: I found out about the Ricky Gervais podcasts. Episodes one and two have already been pulled from the hoasting site, but three through six are available as free downloads and are very very funny.

    from Macfixit.com:

Quicktime 7.0.4 #3: Problems with DVD Player
DVD Player problems -- try downgrading, then re-upgrading We previously reported issues with DVD Player that occur after installing QuickTime 7.0.4. In particular, users note that movie DVDs are not playable, generating "media not supported" or initialization errors.

In some cases, reverting to QuickTime 7.0.1 using the provided re-installer works to resolve these issues.

As previously noted, Apple briefly removed QuickTime 7.0.4 from its downloads page, later replacing it with an apparently modified release of the same version. It seems that downgrading to QuickTime 7.0.1 then re-installing QuickTime 7.0.4 with the new installer alleviates this and other issues for some readers.

    Fred Jung writes:

"I updated QuickTime to 7.0.4 via Software Update before 10.4.4 was available. Later in the day I also Updated to 10.4.4. When I read your DVD Player problems report, I tried one of my DVD's and sure enough DVD Player displayed the "media not supported" message with a disk that had previously functioned properly.

"I used the QuickTime 7.0.1 re-installer and the DVD once again functioned normally. Next I checked Software Update and QuickTime 7.0.4 was as I expected once available for installation, so I re-installed QuickTime 7.0.4, restarted and now the DVD works properly with QuickTime 7.0.4."

  15. I haven't had anay problems with DVDPlayer, so perhaps I didn't download the earliest version at all, which would account for both of my versions appearing to be the same.

  16. I only now noticed that 7.04 is a Universal Binary.
