  1. With the Philips DVP 642

    1. Can I burn an .avi file encoded as divx and have it play in a phillips dvp642 or any other divx dvd player without have to convert it into .vob, mpeg1/2 ?

    2. What's a proper way to burn .avi files to dvd, as storage, and not intended to be used to playback the movie on a dvdplayer ?

Don't know - have you checked the Philips website, or a dealer? Is this player listed in the "DVD Players" section to the left? Details may be there.

    Burn as a data DVD.
There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

    Carpe diem.

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room.

Yes. Just burn as Data. You probably should be aware though of things like GMC & QPEL, which have been known to cause some issues with certain settop players. Luckily AVI Recomp, or https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?guideid=810&howtoselect=4;13#810 or https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?guideid=811&howtoselect=4;13#811 should be able to make this a relatively painless procedure.

    Same - burn as Data.
    If in doubt, Google it.

For playback on a PC ? Sure.

There's a couple of ways to go about it - HTML or a "launcher" app in VB are just two of them.

Here's an example that uses HTML:

I've also written one that uses a front-end designed in VisualBasic.

Both methods use MediaPlayerClassic to play the files.
    If in doubt, Google it.

No settop player supports menus when burnt as data yet AFAIK.

Once DivX6 is fully supported, you can create menus using DivX Converter.
    If in doubt, Google it.
