  1. I have these xvid files and i burned them to a disc and it would just play 5 seconds then skip to the next track. So i was searching the forums and found that it doesn't like Open ALD or something (i forgot :P). So i tried demuxing it with AVI_MUX and got that off but now when i go to play it it just says codec not supported....

i converted it to divx and it played fine but it was blocky..... gahh anyone know why this xvid isnt playing?

I see your nick name is very fitting for you ...

Download AVIcodec and post screen shots of what it says.

Then and only then have you provided enough information for someone to offer some help.

Make sure that Global Motion Compensation and Quarter Pixel are unchecked in your encoder profile.

  7. ManWhoCan'tThink,

First you need the latest beta version of Gspot (2.5 or higher) because that version will tell you if you have GMC or QPEL in your files. GMC (global motion compensation) and QPEL (Quarter Pixel) are encoding gimmicks which strive for better results. These however require more processing power and the Philips DVP642 will not play QPEL encoded videos, and you will get a message like, "Codec not supported".

GMC-encoded Xvid files will not work either, and this is probably your problem. This is because Xvid uses a high level of GMC which requires a better processing chip, and this makes it unplayable on the DVP642. However, Divx files with GMC will work. Divx uses an insignificant amount of GMC and it should play okay.

So it's good to know if you have an xvid with GMC or an Xvid or Divx with QPEL before you burn it and waste a CD or DVD. That's why you should get the latest beta version of Gspot.

ahh thank you very much... well it seems they do have GMC like you said...is there anyway i could re-encode the xvid file without GMC?

also ive been trying to convert to divx with virtual dub but the video always looks like garbage when i do it...it becomes very blocky.. is there anyway to change this?

    Open the file in Vdub
    select video ---> Compression
    Select the Xvid codec
    Go to the XviD configuration
To turn off GMC you need to
select "More next to the "Profile @ Level"

Now make sure that the Qpel and GMC are not selected

Once you make these changes you can "save as avi" (if working in VDub).

  10. Yeah, you should use something like virtualdub to re-encode the file. You can keep it in Xvid if you want.

You should make sure you have installed xvid 1.03 or later. You should uninstall old xvid first and then install the latest xvid. I think the older versions of xvid (xvid 1.01) are not fully supported by the dvp642 and you get heavily distorted picture. This can be remedied by double-clicking on the system menu button on the remote. Although this method works to correct the distortion, it is annoying. Therefore we should use the latest xvid codec. Moreover we get better quality encodes.

There is a very basic guide about using virtualdub on Jefferson Ryan's site
    Using Virtualdub
Note that in the xvid encoding section of that tutorial, you should click on the button "load defaults" before inputting the video bitrate that you got from Gspot. This will help you get an accurate filesize.
