  1. I noticed that some people on this site are complaining that their just burned DVDs are freezing in their standalone DVD player. One question that should ALWAYS be asked when this happens is, "Are there zone burning rings on the DVD when you look at the surface of the plastic?" (In other words, burned portion of plastic should appear completely homogeneous with no visible concentric lines, rings, differences in hue or shade.)
See my earlier post on this topic:

My question is: How can I find out before I buy a new DVD burner which ones produce zone burn rings (and are therefore worthless for making DVDs)? I would like to see a list here of all burners that produce zone burn rings so that I can avoid them.

You can't other than to only buy quality media, and burn at slower than the maximum speed if necessary. If you still get rings then try a different burner.

The "zone burn rings" you talk about are abnormal -- they are the characteristics of a failed burn. Hence, your question is fully equivalent to "how can I find a DVD burner that will always burn successfully?" You certainly know the answer to that question: There is no such guarantee. Even the best drives can fail if asked to burn bad media. And even the best media can fail if the burner is inadequate. So you see why your question has no answer.

As guns1inger says, the best you can do is buy a good drive and good media, burn at moderate speed, and use good burning software. That won't guarantee success, but it will move the probability needle closer to 100% than if you used a random drive, dodgy media, max burn speed, and lousy software.

My LG 4167 burner produced these zone rings, yet the burns were fine and always tested out well. I believe at the time this was common with LG burners. I could eliminate them by burning at 4X but saw no reason to do so as the ringed discs played fine.
