Darnefnet - you should probably get a better hsf quickly. the max operating temp for that cpu is 71.4C

aedipuss, I don't think those Yorkfield core temps display properly with this program. HW Info also shows them high on my Q9300, but the CPU temp is correct at 29C idle - 43C full load.

Anyway, though this thread may be dead by now, thought I would add my results from a Gigabyte GA-EP-P45-DS3R MB with 4GB OCZ DDR2 1066 RAM and a OC'd Q9300 CPU (@3Ghz.) that I put together recently. Happy with the setup so far. But if I could afford DDR2 1333 RAM, it might do a bit better.

Use Real Temp with TJmax set to 100 for 45nm processors.

I replaced my aging Phenom 9500 with a 920 OC'd to 3.3Ghz. Very happy with the performance. I posted my test results in this thread as I don't know that graysky is updating the benchmark site any more: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic362953.html

Thanks for the info. I only wanted to see just how fast this was, I just replaced a 9950 black edition, only had it two days so far its not blowing me away even though it looks like a faster clock speed, I blow my cooling pump so using the stock cooler, get the pump back next week, then i will give it some serious oc, and voltage.

    Try one without HT enabled.

Checking into it now. Will report back tomorrow.

    Layne

    Edit:

Sorry was wrong about the FSB, it's really 133.6MH with 20x multiplier for the i7 920 core. Not sure how to disable HT.

  13. lanye - weird- something just doesn't seem right, the 1333mhz memory is only running at 1069.1mhz. but it shows the i7 slightly overclocked @ 2.8 vs. 2.67 stock.

Should be in the BIOS somewhere to allow you to disable HyperThreading. I'd like to see if there is really any difference between having it enabled or not. I had enabled it on my DH800 when I first got it and ran some tests but it seemed to slow my encodes down, and apps that cannot multi-thread were not able to utilize 100% of the clock on the single processor. I know they got rid of HT for a while so maybe they've resolved what issues it might have. Otherwise splitting 4 physical cores into 8 logical cores doesn't seem to make much sense.

I ran my cpu @ 3.8Ghz w/ my last mobo, it would encode x264 for hours stable, but my new mobo can't be set to 3.8Ghz, I have to set it @ 3.72Ghz or 3.82Ghz by the multiplier

@ 3.82Ghz it was crashing so I had to dial it back

I will be experimenting w/ the hypertransport BIOS settings in the hopes of making stable @ around 3.8Ghz again

    Got it stable @ 3.792Ghz

OMG! mrswla, 3.2Hhz stock on 1.34v, that is nice

bump up the cpuv to 1.45v-1.50v and bump up the cpu multiplier in BIOS to 20 and get 4Ghz w/ ease, w/ good cooling you might get 4.2Ghz

    A guy in another forum I frequent gets 4.4Ghz w/ a PII 940 w/ 1.6v and phase change

1.35v-1.45v is the normal range, even AMD condones 1.5v w/ good aftermarket cooling

I'd like to see some Intel chips clocked as high as the AMD IIs to see how they compare.

My Q6600 clocked at 3.2Ghz is faster at encoding (66fps-72fps) than Sandy B's Q9550. I wouldn't mind getting the Q9550 since the price has dropped to $229 at newegg. Curious as to how fast it will encode with a decent overclock.

I have both a Phenom II 920 and a Intel Q9300, both OC'd to 3.3Ghz and they both process H.264 at about the same speed. The Phenom is a bit crippled with the MB it's using or I might be able to squeeze a bit more speed out of it. (It's a HTPC) I do BD>MKV conversions lasting about six hours on both PCs and they finish at about the same time.

imho that would not be a significant enough upgrade to warrant the expenditure for you, I would get a i7 920 @ least and run DDR3 in triple channel since the prices have dropped

are you adding extra v to the NB as well as the cpu, and OC'n w/ the multipier rather than the bus?

An I7 would mean a complete new build since it won't fit on a 775 motherboard. The Q6600 overclocked to 3.2Ghz encodes almost as fast as a stock I7. Was curious to see what the Q9550 would do overclocked to around 3.8Ghz.

Maybe the prices will drop even more when the I5s come out but I won't hold my breath. The Q6600 skyrocketed in price when the I7s came out. It was down to $187 around the first of the year. I was ready to buy another one when the price dropped but it never did.

No changes in voltages except upping the RAM voltage to 2.1VDC for the OCZ 1066 RAM with the Phenom. It's a locked multiplier, so I raised the bus frequency to 236Mhz.

The original info is linked in a earlier post: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic362953.html#1930454 I've made other mods since then, but haven't re-ran the benchmark. The PC is a HTPC and outputs over HDMI to my video projector and doesn't really need to run any faster.

It's using a Micro-ATX MB and is limited on BIOS settings and also has limited cooling as it's in a desktop type case in my entertainment center. I replaced the old CPU, a early version Phenom, with the 920 by updating the BIOS, so the MB is not really optimized to the new CPU. I may replace the MB at some point as that's a mild OC compared to the +800Mhz OC on the Intel Q9300, and then I could also use faster RAM.

Your 920 is not a BE, or are you multiplier limited by the mobo?
