I can play videos with subs when the sub name is the same as the file name however I cannot turn them off. I have my output set to DirectShow VRM7/9 Renderless. As the video is playing, i right click and the subtitles menu is greyed out. I installed Vobsub to see if that would fix it but no luck. Any other thoughts? Thanks

Have you checked under Play->Subtitles and Navigate->Subtitles and Play->Filter->vobsub/vsfilter ?

Sometimes you have to select vmr 7 renderless to get the subtitles to not be grayed out.

Do any other icons show up in your taskbar tray when you're playing a video with subs, such as a slightly-curved green arrow?

ffdshow also has subtitle options, but it's less likely to be the culprit... so if experimenting with Vobsub's subtitle stream options doesn't help, check ffdshow's options (in the video decoder/VfW options). If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?
