  1. My writer has recently started producing coaster with weird burntracks. The supplied picture shows two discs burned with dvddecrypter:

I burned an image that was 4,7 gigs, so the discs should be full.
The one on the left was supposedly "successful" without verification afterwards, the one on the right was also "succesful" but failed "verify" for obvious reasons. I also tried to burn the image with Nero, which produced a disc quite similar to the left one.
I made sure to save the Nero log:

After Nero failed during Lead-out, I had to forcefully excise the disc with a paperclip.

So, is the drive pooched? I have easily burned 500+ discs, and I recently learned burner have a limited lifespan.
Will I need to get a new one?

According to that log you posted, DMA is off on your IOMEGA DVDRW. You'll need to enable it. Here's a link on how to enable DMA mode.

    http://www.cdrlabs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7625

If you have problems in enabling DMA mode look at this link below:

    http://www.cdrlabs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6645

If you are able to enable DMA mode but the burns still fail (lead out) then try burning with IMGBURN instead of NERO. If using IMGBURN fails as well then it's time for you to buy a new dvd burner.

  3. I know it says "DMA: off", but even if it is, I have burned dozens of good discs with it that way, so I highly doubt that's the problem.

Edit: After having checked DMA settings after a reboot, all settings seem to be in order, all IDE channels running on UDMA, so the settings don't seem to be the problem.

Gonna try a last burn with ImgBurn to see if the software is the issue, which I doubt it is.

then you must have been burning your dvd discs very slow in PIO mode. since DMA mode is now enabled you should be burning dvd discs fine unless you get another failure then it's your laser that's dying which means time to buy a new dvd burner which is so cheap these days.

No, what I was saying was that the DMA settings were always in order and DMA was always on.
I do burn slowly at 2,4x because for some reason my burner won't go faster, it would go to 4x when it was new but that ended after a while, but I think even 2,4x is was too fast for it to be PIO.
The ImgBurn session is done soon, and I expect the same results as with Nero and DVDDecrypter.

from that log you posted DMA was OFF therefore it was not in order. you say it would burn 4x speed but that ended because your dvd burner was PIO mode which will cause burn speed to drop to a slow speed. when a dvd burner is in DMA mode you will achieve the burn speeds that the burner is suppose to be at. as i said if you're able to burn a disc okay with IMGBURN then your drive is fine. by the way what brand of dvd media are you using?
    Quote Quote
  7. OK, so I burned 4 discs alternating between ImgBurn and DVDDecrypter, everyone apparently successful, completing both burning and verification.
Burned a fifth disc with Nero, and this one failed a minute or two into the burn.

Note how the DMA says "on".
I'm fairly certain the drive is balancing precariously on its last arthritic leg, so I'm gonna get a new one.

what brand of dvd media are you using? according to your log it says "UNKNOWN" media. if you're using some cheap dvd media it could be why your burner is failing to burn the disc. you could buy some VERBATIM dvd media and test it w/your drive. if fails to burn as well only then would I say buy a new dvd burner.

Hehe, Verbatim, Like the ones I've been using? http://www.sweburn.com/product_info.php?cPath=23&products_id=77&language=en

It got through the first 45 or so of the 50-stack before producing errors, then producing a couple more errors with the first discs of a new 50-stack, but it also successfully burned a couple of discs, complete with verify procedure and all.
It's so delightfully random that I can really only chalk it up to hardware failure.

  11. I just installed and burned my first disc with my new burner, an 18-speed Samsung.
It burned it's first disc at 12x and it passed verification with flying colors.
