Here is my problem:
I downloaded a music DVD. When I look at the sound levels of the VOBs (in Gold Wave), I see that they top out at about -18 db (about 0.11 of the volume potential).
Considering this is a music video, I want them to top out at 0.0 db (1.00 of the volume potential)-- in other words, utilize the full amplitude potential without distortion.
I could easily strip the mpeg2 files from the DVD, demultiplex them, load the audio stream into Goldwave and max it, then multiplex them back into mpeg2 files and reauthor. Not a problem.
However, I really like the menus of this DVD. Nice artwork and fonts, etc.
So what I just learned is this-- VOB files actually contain some of the indexing and navigation data within them (not news to most of you, I'm sure). I learned this because I thought that I could simply demultiplex the VOBs (as mpeg2 files, of course), jack the audio to where I want it, multiplex the files back, and put them back into the VIDEO_TS folder.
I always thought the indexing and menu information was contained in the IFO files, and maybe the VTS_01_0.VOB file. I thought the VOB files starting at VTS_01_1.VOB, were just dressed-up mpeg2 files.
Obviously, I was wrong. After I did the above process and tried to play my VIDEO_TS folder (after having supplanted all the native VOB files with my audio-maxed ones), the chapter indexing totally did not work, and the DVD would hang up anywhere after the first 3 minutes or so.
Okay.... so the obvious question:
Is there any way to reauthor while retaining the menu and indexing info?
As you can see, all I want to do is max the audio levels and plug those VOBs back into the structure of the VIDEO_TS folder.
Any help is appreciated!

Try this:
1) Use pgcdemux to extract out the streams(audio, video), celltimes, subpics, etc. Use this only for the titles, don't touch the menus. I don't own any music dvd's so I don't know if it will have SUP files.
2) Use your audio editor, in this case goldwave - to do what you have to do
3) Use muxman to MUX everything back together that you did in step 1, but use the new audio instead. Don't forget to import celltimes.
4) Use vobblanker to replace with the new title. When you replace you import the new IFO of your titleset in step 3(where you used muxman) -
Pinstripes, thanks for the to-the-point instructions.
It worked great.
Thanks for taking the time to respond.
