Hi y'all - my Aiwa VCR, which up until today had been playing tapes without issue, has developed this static-positioned distorted horizontal line across all tapes I've tried. It actually appears more like clustered small vertical lines spread out horizontally across the screen. Standard play, EP or LP, commercial tapes/any tapes - some form of this distorted line exists, in the upper half of the screen.
Here is a link to a video with an example of the problem - https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/o786mf9l0cl06kkjgw98u/20261022_213211_394_657.mov?rlkey...=w38u8h44&dl=0
I have thoroughly cleaned the head and all guides and areas the tape interacts with. Adjusting tracking does not help. Some tapes worse than others, although haven't sorted out a pattern.
Are one of the heads just wearing down? Possibly something deeper stuck there? Hoping there might be some insight from someone who has experienced this before.
Cheers

If this was one tape I would say a scratch along the tape due to tape damage, but since it happens on any tape I would assume there is a misalignment or a mechanical problem, The DOC is trying to compensate for the signal loss but this would appear as a static noise bar if the DOC was not present, Another possibility is the VCR is damaging the tape as it plays it, I would still visually check the tape to make sure there is no damage.

the physical tape seems fine after playing, no apparent damage. are there adjustments I can make to alignment to check? i am used to working on cassette decks but have less experience with VCRs

You don't start messing with the alignment until you make sure there is no problems with the mechanism, Make sure there is no cracked gears worn or loose parts, the mechanism is clean and lubricated.
The fact that your VCR was playing tapes without issues this is less likely to be an alignment issue and more likely to be a mechanical fault. -
From my own experience , seeing this kind of line/distortion , it looks like typical tape damage.
Probably something in the tape path causing this.
You should not play any valuable tapes in that VCR from now on, until the problems have been fixed/determined.
Of course, you should check the tapes on another VCR to verify.
