  1. I ripped a number of my DVDs to MP4 years ago and find that there is a problem with the horizontal lines in the image. It's most clearly seen when I pause the MP4 - as seen in the attached screenshot.

    I've always used Handbrake to convert my DVDs to files. Items that I ripped more recently don't have the same problem so I apparently did something to the settings that stopped this from happening.

    What causes this problem?

    Interlacing or Telecine. Depends on the video norm (Telecine only happens in NTSC material and is more probable to happen when the movie was originally cinematic).

  3. Use a deinterlacer like bwdif or yadif.

    That would be wrong if it is not interlaced, but Telecine.
