I noticed that some silver Verbatim DVD+R media stored for years in spindles are loosing their top "skin", but are still fully readable. Should I worry about this?

I would back them up asap if they have data, If blank, it should be discarded immediately and cannot be trusted.

DVD-R/+R are sandwiched polycarbs, so there is no "skin" like CD-R.
So are you referring to a lacquer surface?
Those may be fake Verbatims, as Europe was inundated with that junk media in the 2000s.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

They have data and will be difficult to make backups if this is a more general problem.
I am not familiar with the term "lacquer surface", but I am sure that these are genuine Verbatim Matte Silver AZO DVD+R (MCC-004-00). Most of the surface of the affected media is gone leaving a shiny top. -
Did you manage to restore it fully? In cases like that, it’s definitely better to have insurance to cover any unexpected costs or damages. I’m planning to call Sunshine Health phone number soon to find out what kind of policies they offer nowadays and see if they have something that fits my needs. It’s always good to be prepared, especially with things that can get expensive to fix. Have you looked into any specific coverage options yet? Would love to hear what you think
