Hi,
I have recently bought a sony dcr dvd 201e. The capture software that came with it is really poor (to say the least).
Every time I've tried to capture with this f*&£$% software (also called ImageMixer) I end up with lines (I think this is called atifacts or something like that).
Anyway I have managed to copy the DVDs onto my HDD vob files.
Now the trick.......How do I edit the movies (cut what I don't need) and merge the 6 mini dvds that I have without losing any quality (if it's a stupid question please avoid the nasty comments, I'm only a newbie at the end of the day).
Let me explain what I've done so far.
Have the VOB files onto my HDD. Converted (and filtered the artifacts) them using TMPG XPRESS. Used Pinnacle Studio 9 to create the special effects and to re-assembled the 6 discs. Burned that as a dvd but as expected in the process i have lost some quality. I think it's during the conversion with TMPG XPRESS.
Anybody has any idea ? Is there a software out there that allows me to edit and merge .vob files ?
Cheers
Stephen

If the lines you are refferring to look like a comb particularly around spots where there is movement in the video that is how it is supposed to look. It's called interlacing and is how video appears on a monitor. DVD palying software uses filters to make it appear normal. These lines will not be visible when vied on a TV.
I'd suggest using the software that came with it, most likely it just reassembles your the video into a MPG that can be used on your comp which would be a lossless transfer.
Edit and encode using software that will only encode the footage you have changed such as where transitions are. The less you mess with it the better off you are since it's already MPG to begin with. -
....I end up with lines
Wouldn't they be bandings instead of lines?????
There's an application called VOB edit, you can search for it around here. If I'm not mistaken, TMPGENC Plus can also merge VOB/MPEG files.
If that doesn't work, u can do this (at least you can try): Prepare a DVD with your favorite applc. (I use DVD Architect 2.0) - you can author with no menus, that means, one movie/file linked to the next one. After the end of the process, you'll need DVD Decrypter. Try to follow this guide:
Open DVD Decrypter and select the newly created DVD folder;
Choose IFO mode;
Hit Tools and Settings;
On the guide IFO MODE, choose Options; File Splitting; NONE
Just to make sure everything works out, on the guide FILE MODE; choose Options; File Splitting; NONE.
After the end of the process you can return to the original DVD Decrypter config.:
Choose File.
IFO MODE guide; Options; File Splitting; 1 GB;
FILE MODE guide; Options; File Splitting; By File.
If this works, you'll get an only VOB file. Hope this works..... -

Open DVDShrink , select reauthor, located and select the vobs you want , select in/out (start /end) . Shrink away with no compression.
http://www.dvdshrink.info

Other solution VirtualDub MOD (mpeg version) . Import files, cut ,export.
(from memory i don't think you can 'append' mpeg in virtual dub)

Is DVD Shrink compatible with dual layer dvds cause it does the job but my reslting file is over 5gb.

Edit and author directly with Tmpgenc dvd author.
Or edit VideoReDo or MPEG Video Wizard and then author with your favorite authoring tooool.
