  1. Ok, So I'm trying to fix my mothers' computer.
A year or so ago she bought a ATI TV Wonder so she could record tv shows off of cable.
While we have been able to watch tv with this card, trying to record has been a major pain.

Now I'm new to working with video. I have a tunercard that doesn't suck (to bad) and ripp my dvds and Junk like that. So I do know alittle bitt about all of this stuff.

Anyways lets get down to it.
I have installed all the major codecs and Non of them show up in the list in the program that came with the card nor does it show up in Vdub.

Here is a list of codecs that do show up:
    Codec List
    Uncompressed RGB
    Cinepak Codec by Radius
    Indeo Video 5.10
    Intel 4:2:0 Video V2.50
    Intel Indeo(R) Video R3.2
    Intel Indeo Video 4.5
    Intel IYUV codec
    Microsoft H.261 Video Codec
    Microsoft H.263 Video Codec
    Microsoft RLE
    Microsoft Video 1

Now the software that came with the card does let you ripp to Mpeg2. And I guess that works but.. not really. Even if I could make myself happy with ripping to mpeg2, I would like to be able to open the file in Vdub and convert it to xvid. But like I said, I can't use any good codecs.

Now on to the next thing. Resolutions.

Here is a list of Resolutions that work with the software that came with the card.
    Resolutions
    128x96
    192x144
    256x192
    320x240
    384x240
    448x240
    512x240
    576x240
    640x240
    704x240

And almost no Resolutions seem to work in Vdub.
Anyways, I need your guys' help. I have tryed alot of things, but I have a funny feeling that it is going to be something easy.

what does an ati AIW card have to do with converting dvd's to xvid?

    1. you have to install a xvid codec ...

    and an ac3 codec ..

    install virtualdubmod

see guides on ripping dvd to harddrive and load into v-dubmod (or v-dubmpeg2 or avisynth) ... and

encode to xvid following the guides to the left ..

rather a short explanation - but not sure where or what you are trying to do exactly ...

p.s. is your mom good looking ?

  3. Maybe I was unclear. I have xvid installed already along with all major codecs. But non of the installed codecs show up in windows were you can pick what codec you want to use.

    Also I have vdubmod already.

And my mother is not hot. Sorry.

  4. Do you want to record TV programs or rip DVD’s ?
Exactly what ATI model is you card?

  5. Recording TV programs.
    ATI TV WONDER LE.
The fact that my codec's don't work bugs me the most, but I need to fix the other stuff that I listed.

  6. Go to Control Panel –System –Hardware -Device manager – Open the branch that says “sound, video and game controllers”, double click video codecs, and see if you have all the codecs listed.

P.S. those instructions are for Windows XP, there may be slight differences in other versions

  7. all my codecs that I have installed shows up on this list. And yes I have XP on this computer.

But I can't get the codecs to show up on any other list. Like the list in Vdub and all the other recording software.

Could be a corrupt DirectX installation - try reinstalling DirectX.

You can download the latest version from

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx?url=/windows/directx/downloads/

  10. I installed the newest DirectX and everything on this page:
    http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/winxp/tvwonder-xp.html?type=xp&prodType=mm&prod=aiw...=12&submit.y=6
The only thing on that page that I havn't installed is the Multimedia Center I'm still waiting for that to download. Ether way I still can't view my codecs on any screen where I can pick what codec I want to use.
    And still the crappy resolutions.
I'll let you know what happens when I install the Multimedia Center. But I don't think it will change anything.
If anyone knows anything post a message.

  11. Is the program that came with the card that important? Lose the ATI program and go with Virtual VCR. It's free, and it works incredibly well.

You poor resolution options xxx/240 is caused by your ati drivers. I believe your card is bt878 based and these free generic bt878/879 wdm drivers may solve the problem for you. The ATI Wonder VE is an older ATI card and I'm sure your problem has been discussed here before. A search will find the related threads.

  13. I tryed those drivers more then once and could not get them to work with the card.
I will try that vcr program and see how that works.
    Later!
