Whenever I convert a widescreen movie with tmpgenc and then burn it to dvd when playing the movie back the widescreen/letterbox display is fairly thin and the black bars top and bottom are much bigger than on any of my pre-burnt movies.
when creating the mpg in tmpgenc i choose full-screen (keep aspect ratio).
any ideas how to make the main picture bigger whilst maintaining the wide-screen aspect?

How are you setting up the parameters? If you use the wizard you should get the correct result.
If you are setting up manually the input needs to be set to an aspect ratio of 4:3, Video arrange of Full Screen and the output ratio must be set to 16:9.
You get the problem you describe if the input is set to 16:9 and the output is set to 4:3.
Also, maybe the input is not strictly 16:9 but has black-bars already in the video.
