    Lord Of The Rings 1st
Harry Potter (first two films) Close 2nd

Of course, without Lord Of The Rings, there would probably be no Harry Potter.

You're entitled to your opinion, and I agree the mythic element is indispensible to the plot. All credit to Lucas for that, and he did well, on the whole.

But give Tolkien credit too. He was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, regarded in academia as THE expert on Beowulf. He was fluent in a number of ancient languages and could read Beowulf, The Nibelungenlied, Njal's Saga, The Icelandic Eddas, et. al., in the original. Fair to say he had far more knowledge of myths, particularly Germanic myths, than Lucas.

As to the writing style, it's inevitable Tolkien would try to convey some of the flavor of saga, which was intended to be told or, preferably sung. To do so within the form of the modern prose novel is quite difficult, and few other writers have succeeded. Off the top of my head, E.R.Eddison did it well, though it's actually a good bit harder to read than Tolkien. The English is that of Chaucer's time, approximately, and that puts people off.

I won't disparage the Harry Potter books or movies, they have their place. But they're light entertainment compared to Tolkien, whose purpose was more serious.

I'm not dissin' Tolkien. I love LOTR the movies and I'm just about done with the books. All I was getting at was that all fantasy is mostly based on some aspect of what has already been discussed.

Mainly I was trying to get at that I see Harry Potter as below Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. It's too childish for my tastes.

I can see where you would get that. Unfortunately, these books (not so much the movies) are marketed strictly in the children's section at most book stores. After reading all 5 of the Harry Potter books I've found that there are many themes that are probably missed by most young children. Occasionally, the books do take on a childish feel, but I believe they are still entertaining.

    Hello,

Oh no doubt there entertaining. It's just that I haven't read any of the books and after seeing the first movie (it was ok, nothing special) I haven't been hooked.

Nothing wrong with the series but just not my type.

Pardon me, that wasn't meant to come across as criticism. And sorry about getting on my high horse over Tolkien. Besides his immense learning, he was a good and humane man, worthy of respect.

I'm with ya on Star Wars. I even liked the Phantom Menace. Lucas lost me with ep 2, though, all that damned adolescent mooning. Blah. Fast forward.

My wife looks at me with amused incomprehension when I put on one of the LOTR movies. (At least once a week). She's the same with Harry Potter. I admit I enjoyed the first couple views, but I've had enough of HP for the time being.

    Hello,

Fritzi93 - No problem. These type of movies always bring out the fight in us because we care about them. No faults there .

  15. I preferred HP, in fact haven't even seen LOTR 2 or 3 (and have no desire to ever see them), but Star Wars - the original, not the remastered shite - would blow them both out of the water!
