  1. OK, I don't consider myself a newb to conversion but ac3's got me beat. I have looked around this and other sites but as far as I can see I haven't done anything wrong. Please could someone take a look.

I have an xvid file with ac3 audio (gspot tells me this, and that I have the correct codecs installed.) Windows media player plays this file fine, audio and video in perfect harmony.

When I try to convert this file to VCD using tmpgenc the resulting file has perfect video but no audio. I seemed to remember reading somewhere about tmpgenc not liking ac3 so I came straight here and checked it out. I was right. I read up and installed virtualdub. Here's what I did.

Opened the xvid in virtual dub and selected save wav. This sure enough created a wav file the same length (in hours and minutes ) as my xvid. Windows media player also played this file as a stand alone wav / audio file.

Back I go to tmpgenc hoping to marry the two (xvid and newly created wav files.) I follow the steps as usual but when I get to selecting my source, I replace the audio file with my own wav. I set tmpgenc on its way and everything seems to be fine, until I test the result.

    NO AUDIO AGAIN, ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

So, in a nutshell, I have an xvid file which plays fine but which has no sound after converting to VCD.

I can rip the audio, as wav, a convert the xvid / video and wav / audio, marrying the two halves, but this also results in no audio.

If I'm doing something amazingly stupid please let me no.

    Cheers

    Hello,

Try using besweet to convert the .ac3 to .mp2.

  3. Thanks yoda. Never heard of besweet but I'll give it a go and report back. I take it I still use tmpgenc to convert to VCD after doing this?

  4. Download BeSweet GUI. It make using BeSweet easier.

  5. Having never even heard of besweet before I'm a little stuck. I run besweet gui, select my imput file, but it can't find the .ac3 file. Help

  6. Rename the .WAV file you created with VirtualDub as .AC3.

  8. Look people, thanks for your suggestion and help with besweet but it just ain't happening. Whenever I try and rename my file windows just overides my decision as filename.ac3.wav . I'll think I'll give up with tmpgenc, like I say I'm not really a newb when it comes to converting using it. I think another conversion tool would be the better way for me to go. Any ideas what I can use to convert xvid with ac3 to VCD, or xvid and the wav I know have to VCD?

    Thanks again for your help

  9. I personally use DVD2SVCD with CCE as the encoding machine. It's a little tricky to set up initially, but once you're past that speed bump it works like a charm.

It can also use TMPGENc if you're more comfortable with that program.

When you rename the file in Windows, put opening and closing quotes around the filename i.e. "Filename.AC3" instead of Filename.AC3. Windows is trying to be too clever by trying to protect the original file extension.

  10. I'll try the "filename.ac3" thing. Thanks. I never knew this

  11. jyn, renaming using quotation marks seems to have sorted things. The resulting audio file is one second longer than my video file. but hopefully (fingers crossed) this will not present any problems. I'll set tmpgenc off now and return with my verdict. Wish me luck

  12. I hope you don't get a mpg with "audio out of sync" problems. That's happens fairly frequently especially after NTSC to PAL and PAL to NTSC conversions.
