I have a system based on the Athlon XP 1600+ and the MSI K7T266 Pro2-RU motherboard. I have it setup with a dual boot Windows98SE and Windows XP Pro. So, easy comparisons can be made between Win98 and WinXP.

In the system, I have a WinTV Go card. Under Win98SE, CPU usage is about 15% when I have WinTV2000 running with video is being displayed. To check CPU usage, do a Start, Accesssories, System Tools, System Monitor.

Under WinXP, CPU usage is 60% when WinTV2000 is running under the same circumstances. Do a Ctrl-Alt-Del to get to use CPU usage meter in WinXP. Also, WinTV2000 is the only application on my system that will crash WinXP and lock my system up, for obvious reasons when you consider how much CPU time it takes up. The first set of drivers consumed 80% of the CPU.

Hauppauge has been issuing revised WinXP drivers for WinTV PCI cards on a frequent basis since last fall. So, I think the high CPU usage in WinXP is caused by the still rough drivers.

Also, all the functions of WinTV2000 and WinTV32 are not available in the version for WinXP.

Incidentally, WinXP does not bootup faster than Win98SE. It only appears that way. While you will get to the desktop screen faster with WinXP than with Win98, you can't do anything in WinXP until it finishes booting. You can tell that WinXP is still booting by the continued activity of the hard drive and the inablility to do anything while you have hard drive activity.
