Howdy everyone. After recently purchasing a DVD burner and a new DVDROM drive as well for my "main" computer, I have moved my CDRW and DVDROM drives that were previously being used in the "main" computer to the "not-so-main" computer. Previously only a CDROM drive was in the not-so-main computer, and was running win xp (1ghz p3 256 rambus ram, intel vc820 mb). DVDs had been previously been played on this computer setup, before having purchased the new mb & cpu for the main pc. Anyway what is happening is (after a new installation of Win XP and updating to SP2) using the DVD rom drive I can view/read/install from any Data CD, however no DVD discs (either a store-purchased one or a burnt one on DVD-R or DVD+r media) plays.
I receive the error "Windows cannot read from this disk" - there is more but its your average your disk is empty and i dont know what to do with it type error. I can provide the exact error later, as I am at work. Again a data cd is read fine. The DVD Drive is a Toshiba 1502 DVDROM. I haven't flashed the firmware for thid DVD player, but it has always been fine playing DVDs previously.
I've treid several software dvd players - WinDVD, PowerDVD and Windows Media Player as well. All discs tested work 100% in my main computer and our standalone dvd player too.
APSI drivers updated too (using the Adaptec ones)
any suggestions questions or advice is greatly appreciated, thank you!!

Have you checked your 'Device manager'? Maybe the MB still thinks it's a CD drive. You can also uninstall the channel it's on and let Windows reinstall and maybe refresh the settings.
Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>IDE controllers>Primary or Secondary channel (Whichever it's on)
There you can also check DMA and uninstall the driver for that channel.
If no luck, maybe dirty laser lens or time for a new drive? -
Not at home yet (still at work)
but I recall device manager correctly detected as a Toshiba SD1502 drive.
The drive is about 2 years old or so, but has performed flawlessly until i swapped it into this other computer so I don't think it just suddenly died on me . I'll ensure DMA is on & also remove/readd the IDE controller TY for the suggestions!
