    Hi,
I am a new member. I currently have a Sony dvd player that plays all NTSC dvds but I cannot play any PAL dvds. I am thinking about buying another dvd player. I need some help regarding the best dvd player(reasonably priced) that I can find that will play both NTSC and PAL dvds as well as upconvert dvds. (I am not thinking about a blue ray player as of now due to the cost)
but are there blue ray players that can play both PAL and NTSC dvds.

    Thanks

    Kay

The only BluRay players sold in the USA at this time that are capable of what you want are the Oppo (http://www.oppodigital.com) and Momitsu (sold at http://www.hkflix.com).

I don't keep up with Philips models any more, but surely someone here can recommend a Philips player that can do what you want and is cheap.

  3. Pioneer players are better than Philips and will play PAL discs. Some can be made region free, not all.

  4. I think Oppo is the only BD player(BDP-83) with region free .cost close to $500.

or the Philips 3982 at walmart for $44 .sux they don't sell the 5990 anymore.try it and if you don't like it return it

I have narrowed it down to
    - DVP 5990 - Upconverting dvd player plays PAL dvds costs around $50
    - BDP5010 - Blue Ray player not sure about PAL dvds costs around $130 Costco
    - BDP7200 - Blue Ray player claims to play PAL dvds costs around $130 Sams

My need is to play regular PAL dvds and everything else NTSC is fine

Am I better off getting the blue ray players instead of 5990 ?
Are all these three region free ?

Thanks for your response in advance

  8. I read many good reviews about the LG BD370, but I'm not sure if it's easy to hack like the Philips.

No. I will tell you why below.

Almost no BluRay players can be made region free for DVD playback with a hack. I'm not aware of any in the US market that can be other than Oppo and Momitsu, which can be made region free for DVD and BluRay playback. Region free for DVD only on a BluRay player? It's a no go situation 99% of the time.

So the DVD player might be able to be made region free but the 2 BluRay players probably can't, but I don't have any of these players and thus have no first hand experience with them.
