  1. i'm having problems burning cdrs/data cds lately. i used nero. i was trying to burn avi files like usual, i thought they were burned successfully b/c it didnt show any red marks or anything wrong while burning, and it poped up something said "burning successfully." but then i tried to check if there's anything wrong with the files i burned, one of the avi files stopped playing suddenly and went on to the next avi file. it didnt show anything wrong when i played it with mplayerc, but there's a red "!" when i play it with wmp. i wonder if it is file error, or something wrong with my pc. i started having problems burning since i removed then reinstalled most of my codecs, i wonder if that's the biggest mistake i made. and it wasted my a lot of cds. sometimes there's even file error in the burning process. wut can i do to fix this problem???? i'm really getting frustrated. Plz help!!

I too burn a number of avi files to CD and DVD and often find that I get the red exclamation point and a message like "class not registered".

There can be a number of causes of this problem, but start with the original file on your hard drive. Do you get the same error message? If the file plays fine on your HD, your hardware/software/media is at fault - try burning it again.

If you can play the file in another player, but not WMP (even from the hard drive), thank your stars because that happens to me all the time. WMP just can't play every avi file out there because there are dozens of different flavours of avi. This would be Microsoft's fault, sort of, for not anticipating every possible combination of avi files.

This might be time consuming depending on the size of the file, but try copying it back from the CD/DVD to your hard drive. If the process hangs or fails, the CD is bad.

One useful tool I use is Avicodec - a freeware application that can tell you what codec was used to create the file and it points you to a source. WMP, when it finds a new codec, only tries to download it from Microsoft's site. There are so many good, but "hacked" codecs out there, this approach by Microsoft just doesn't work.
