  1. I would like to know the perfect combination of hardware and software to transfer vhs, cable and anything from the tv on to my HD.

    No such thing. You'll get a lot of different answers as to what everyone prefers, but it's a subjective thing. There is no "perfect" combination.

    quite true...and with that in mind, I'll offer my 2 cents worth...

    I capture with an old ATI AIW 128, using recommendations from lordsmurf's www.digitalfaq.com

    I capture from Cable, and VHS(sometimes...) direct to MPEG2

    I have many movies captured from cable that are waiting to be burned to DVD...so far with most of them no probs after authoring and burned...

    I use ShowShifter on my PVR(pc based video recorder) and it comes bundle with Divx codec. I have a 120gig hard drive and Divx does help saving space.
