  1. I have an [.avi] (XVID) that has subtitles. I think the subtitles are seperate from the video because when I use VobSub, I can hide or show the subtitles. However, when I use VirtualDubMod to open the XVID, it only shows the [.mp3] audio as the other stream. It's not like with an [.ogm] where you can see the separate subtitle stream ([.txt], [.srt], etc.). It is also not like with those old videos where the subtitles are an actual part of the video and the only way to get them is to rewrite them and time them, or to use the frame by frame method using subrip, etc.

If my media player can play them, and I can use VobSub to turn them off or on, then is there a program that can extract these embedded subtitles?

  2. I found a program called VobSubRip, but it asks for an [.idx] or text format file. That does me no good. If there's a way for VobSub to turn the subtitles on and off, I guess that means that there must be a way for a program to rip a text format file - with timing, of course - from the XVID [.avi].

  3. When I use GSpot to identify the file and hit "Render," the Rendering Details show that there are three output streams. Stream 00 being the video, stream 01 being the audio, and stream 02 being the text file. It reads, "WMMEDIASUBTYPE_BASE..."

  4. I searched before on this forum and didn't find this post before, but I guess I just missed it. It tells you how to extract the text format file from an embedded stream like this. Here is the link:

It works great. Do a text search of some lines from your subtitles. Then highlight all of your subtitles, and save it as an [.ssa] or something similar. Open it with a subtitle editor if necessary and save it to the same file name as your video.
