  1. i'm using the MJPG codec, resulting is pretty good result at the 19 quality level, problem is, it still costing me alot of HD space, around 12GB per an hour of capturing strait from my cable TV, i'm at the 640 X 480 resolution, i'm thinking that if i lowered the resolution, i would get more hour for my HD space. i'm encoding this into SVCD later, so what resolution should i go for?
    480 X 480?
    352 X 480?
    or 352 X 240?

thanks hehe, just wanna watch the olympic at those time that's i'm sleeping

That's what I do. @3-4000 kbps. Can't really tell any difference between capture and live TV.

Go here for information on what resolution to choose:

    http://www.digitalfaq.com/capture/software-resolution.htm

It's the best resource by far.

When you capture avi, t depends on your card.

BT8xxx based cards: Capture the higher you can
Latest ATI & Nvidia cards: Capture at 704 x 480/576
Matrox, other high end cards: Capture whatever you wish
DV capture: You do a transfer, not a capture!

Capturing direct to mpeg 2 thought software is a good alternative. If you have the money, mainconcept 1.4.2 is the best way to do it.
For ATI users, there is also MMC (official application of ATI cards)
If mainconcept is expensive, try power VCR or winDVR or YMPEG plug in for virualvcr/ virtualdub / etc (cheapest method, but buggy...)
