Excuse me if this is the wrong catagory, but most of the others are more suited towards video or the hardware itself.
For starters: win98se (yes, I know it's dated - I need to burn off a few gigs to install something else)
NEC 2510a (2.15 firmware)
Nero 6.3.1.17
Using a ritek DVD+RW (media code RICOHJPNW11) for testing/learning purposes before using write once media.
In nero I've selected the DVD-ROM (ISO) compilation and simply dragged/dropped data exactly as if I was doing a data cd.
When the dvd is finished, it looks like this screenshot

1.99gb reported even though the files appear fine brings up the question of "is this disc reliable".
I know that I have had other pressed data dvds, as well as movies show up with a larger size. Is it anything I'm doing wrong, or some display oddity due to win98?

1.99g is correct if that's how much data you put on the disk. How much data did you put on it? There's 2 amounts
"Is it reliable"... try to read the contents off the disk. If it works, then it's good. If you burn it as a data file it should be fine. Ritek are pretty good media so I wouldn't worry 'bout that. If your not sure how to use nero then try the "Media Wizard" thru Nero and just click DVD-Data.
I like the name for your "G:" Drive -
Madman,
Win 98 has a "quirk", max file size is 2 gig, but you do actually have more on the DVD, just not any one file that is over 1.99, ie, 2 gigs.
No problem. it will last as long as any data disk will under the DVD spec, anywhere between tomorrow and 100 years.
Cheers,

Just a few days late with the response, but oh well.

I've done a little bit more testing and found this to be an overall glitch with win98 (on an XP system a burnt disc using the ISO file system comes up with the correct data amount, while on 98 it's 1.99gb) and all data is accessable/verified with both systems.
The UDF file system does actually report a correct number, but old style of thought comes into play, considering UDF was commonly linked to packet writing software which was generally considered to be less reliable.
That screenshot was the same drive, there were really 4.23 gigs of data on a disc that only "reported" to have been 1.99.1.99g is correct if that's how much data you put on the disk. How much data did you put on it? There's 2 amounts
You can't see the other drive in there with the label of "and" when I had a 4 partition setup there were also drives with the labels of "off" and "die" which usually got comments about it, until I added/moved drives around.I like the name for your "G:" Drive
Actually to be more specific it's FAT32 which has a 4 gig file size limit, although some older programs had issues handling files over 2gb in size. NTFS does not have said limit but win9X does not have native support for it, only NT4/2000/XP/2003 (and I vaugely remember some minor changes in the specification when 2000 was introduced.)Win 98 has a "quirk", max file size is 2 gig, but you do actually have more on the DVD, just not any one file that is over 1.99, ie, 2 gigs.
However this is dealing with the CDFS system, which may have similar issues, but as far as I know that specification has not changed at all, nor is there really much documentation about any file size limits.
Not sure if that's a response to agent or newbin. Granted both of them have their uses, agent being much better for text, and newsbin being better for binaries (although that's an old version, the new one had issues when one server had a corrupt part, but the old one detected and tried an alternate server) however if agent incorporates multi server support in a similar manner that newsbin does, that'd be great, and from statements on their website, it sounds like they intend to.least you're using the best news reader out there
Yes - I do have a bunch of junk running, don't I? Especially considering this is win98.What are all those icons in your systry? N/A???
left to right:
atguard (now defunct but still rather useful firewall), seti, daemon tools, serv-u, dumeter, icq (that's the N/A), megamud (client for majormud, if anyone knows what that is
), azureus, and then a battle.net chat bot.
Well, I think that pretty much covers my findings about the 1.99gb display, and responses to a few other comments along the way.
