  1. i burnt an avi movie on my first dvd+rw....moser baer dvd+rw (4x/4.7GB) at 4x.
the movie plays perfectly from the dvd+rw when played on my pc using windows media player 11.
the prob occurs when i try to play it on my Philips DVP 642K dvd player.
its actually a two part movie ie.2 avi files.
i burnt them as a data dvd on the dvd+rw.
the dvd player completely skips part1 and starts part2 fine, but after exactly 21secs into part2, it freezes for 2secs, jumps to 43secs on the indicator, stops and then gives a 'DISC ERROR'.
i have already made the dvd player region free (ie.after doing the sequence, i saw a 0 in the lower left corner of my tv).
i am able to play the same two part avi movie on the dvd player when burnt as a data cd on a Sony CD-RW (4x/650MB).
so i know its not the avi movie.
this is the 1st time i have tried writing movies as a data dvd and this is my 1st dvd+rw.
    what cud be wrong here?
it cudnt be the dvd+rw either coz the movie from the dvd plays fine on my pc without any freezes or skipping.
i have read a lot of posts including this one about the codec prob: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic319773.html?highlight=dvp 642

but thats not case with me since the prob with him was playing data discs in general and nothin to do especially with dvd+rw data dvds.
can anyone plz help me with this peculiar prob?
    thanx in advance.

    Two problems .

A pc will play anything with the correct decoders installed , a home dvd player will not .

Did you try dvd-r instead ... dvd-rw / dvd+rw may not be compatible with unit .

  3. yeah, i forgot to mention that.
i have played dvds (on rent) on the 642k dvd player before, but havent written a dvd-r before as a data dvd (cant afford to waste a dvd-r just for a test ).
but what i will try next is burning the same avi movie on the dvd+rw as a dvd video.
i actually tried that but it wasnt accepting the avi format.
guess i need to convert it to dvd video format first and then burn it.
i thought maybe someone has faced/knows exactly what this prob is and cud help me out.

EDIT: and oh, i checked the list of compatible media with the Philips dvp642k and dvd+rw is compatible with it.
but i didnt see Moser Baer listed in the list of compatible brands though.
im hopeful though coz moser baer is quite a new brand and maybe that compatibility list isnt updated recently.

Most likely a media issue. The 642 are very media friendly, but I've run across a few brands/types they have issues reading. Try a different brand/type of disc.

As a side note, mine (2 original model 642's) will read any type of media (DVD -R, DVD +R, DVD +R DL, DVD -RW, CDR, CDRW). The only issues have been brand related. I've had Memorex and TDK CDRW's that always had read issues.

  5. ok.........this time i burnt the movie as a dvd-video onto my moser baer dvdrw, using nero vision.
the dvd video plays fine on my pc.
when i try to play it on my philips dvd player, it even displays the menu from which i select the movie.
but after that it just sits there, showing "PLAY" in the indicator.
i waited for 5mins but the movie didnt start and i had to stop it.
i tried this twice, and got the same result.
    im really out of ideas.
does upgrading the player's firmware increase media compatibility?
or can anyone confirm as to whether a moser baer dvdrw is or isnt compatible with a philips dvp 642k dvd player?

All you've really done here is waste a lot of time converting avi files into dvd spec mpeg2 (which totally defeats the point of having a divx player). You still need to try different media.

As for the firmware, there were about 3 versions available for the old version of the 642. The only differences between them had to do with better file playback compatibility and subtitles. The firmware is no longer available from Philips, likely because the new version of the 642 cannot be updated.

  7. i now know that i have the dvp 642k/69 model of the philips dvd player.
my current firmware version is 0531 (which is the default version).
i agree that upgrading the firmware from this version to any other will not only not give me any new features but might cause other probs instead.
so i guess, i will have to exchange this moser baer dvd+rw with another brand.
i have been using samsung and sony cdrws without any probs since 2yrs now.
so which of the two brands shud i try in dvd+rw when i goto exchange the moser baer one?

For DVD-RW media, I've used Verbatim and Memorex (Memorex seems to be hit or miss with many people). I've had good luck with both of them.
