I have been doing a lot of searching on this site as to whether it was best to burn with NERO in DVD-Video mode or ISO / UDF mode, but have found so many people who see Nero as unreliable and likely to give compatibility problems in any mode.

I've seen plenty of other programs including freeware recommended as an alternative, but it's hard to know whether people judge these other programs to be compatible with most DVD players or just the standalone players they have at home.

I'm at my wits end as the more I look into it the more confused I get and there doesn't seem to be any good guides with these types of software being put up against each. It's all anecdotal and I still no less the more I read.

In my case I have re authored a DVD-R which I want to burn to be as compatible with as many standalone players as possible. My plan so far was to burn in dvd-video mode in Nero then duplicate in future with DVD Decrypter. Now I don't know what I want to do.

If you are using Nero to burn with, any compatibility issues you may have are going to be a result of either an error made by the user in the process of creating the title set, a user defined error in the settings for Nero, or a problem with the media itself.

Nero is merely a tool for performing a data transfer. Nothing more. That's all it does. If the files in your title set are DVD compliant and you are using the correct settings, you won't have compatibility problems. Anyone who tries to tell you that using Nero causes the compatibility issues you might have, is plain and simply full of shit and doesn't know what they are talking about and simply fault the software to cover up for their own ignorance.
