JVC cam burns firewire with xp

Hello all, here is a mystery. I have JVC miniDV cam that I had used for several years with my firewire XP system. Everything always worked until recently suddenly XP stopped recognizing camcorder. I smelled smoke. I looked inside the computer and noted that my firewire card had some chared parts. I figured that the card was no good and ordered another one. That one was recognized by XP but not started (device could not start message in device manager). I returned it to the store. I changed motherboard and put a fresh copy of XP. Then I got a new firewire cable thinking that the cable possibly shorted my MOBO and firewire card. Oh yes I changed motherboard because sound also disappeared. I figured I burned the sound chip somehow. Anyway, once I have all new parts, I plugged in my camcorder and NOTHING. My question to the forum is, is it possible that the firewire port of the cam is burned out. if so is there a way to fix it. Thanks

i'd check with JVC about the firewire port , it cost you a bit to fix it i suspect, did you check the power suppy , that may have caused the problem , it may have taken out you firewire card, sound and mother board and camera possible

Thanks for reply. My friend also suggested that it can be power supply. I have a 3 months new Antec case which suppose to have the best power supplies (supposedly). How does one check the power supply?

you need to check the voltage , on all the ouptut leads, antec are good PS's but it's still possible to get a bad one , i've used Enermax PS for years with no problems , then i got a new one and it blew 3 days after i got it , it was replace under warranty and i've had years of use out of it

How does one check the power supply?

You could try monitoring voltages with a software app. You may have one with driver disc that came with your motherboard, assuming you got one. Usually motherboard vendors supply small utils of this type.

Looking at your Computer Details, I see you have an ASUS. What you're looking for is (*resists the urge to type 'anus'*): ASUS Probe.

P.S. I know FireWire was supposed to have 'blistering speeds' but...

The first thing I would do is try another camcorder to quickly narrow the culprit.
