  1. OK, im super noob so please dont kill me:

Whenever you capture from a HI8 camcorder you get DV in type 1, right? when you transfer it back to the camcorder (so you can later record it onto a VHS) does it still have to be in type 1 still or can it be in type 2? i converted it to type 2 because type 1 was fiddly to edit.

I don't think you get ANY type of DV from a HI8 camcorder.
I have one and all it does is spit out very bad quality Mpeg1
through a USB. I capture analog from it , when I have to

edit: I have to say you probably have the record for oldest member
    and fewest posts.

P.S. I was going to say longest member , but I figured all the
smart asses would fill up the post

  3. I'm assuming you mean you have a DV camcorder, since Hi8 is an analog format and can only be captured to DV by passing through a DV device or an analog capture card.

The type 1 and 2 business has nothing to do with the camcorders themselves, as I believe that is just a Microsoft AVI thing. When you send video back to the camcorder using an app such as DVIO, it does not matter whether it's type 1 or type 2, it will be streamed to the tape as DV like a record.

when you capture in HI8, its plain old analog, not digital.

  5. Yea sorry, It's not Hi8, it uses a miniDV cassette. (i don't know why i was thinking Hi8). But basically, using whichever program i prefer, the result footage i edit has to be in DV format to print back onto the camcorder?

Yep. Most editors that accept DV straight from the camera (i.e. capture - argh, bad terminology, but we seem to be stuck with it) will send the footage back to the camera as well. That way, you don't need to worry about type etc. I haven't used DVIO, but chances are it will sort this for you as well.

  7. Programs like DVIO and WinDV give you the choice of generating either type 1 or type 2 DV files when transferring from your camera via firewire. Which type should you use? Whichever one your editing program will accept. At this point most editors accept both, but you never know.

When going back to the camera, it doesn't matter which type of AVI file you start with, because the camera only cares about the data it's receiving and really has no clue what an AVI file is anyways- that's just a windows thing.
