  1. I work for the Kinsey Institute as a research assistant. I need some help from you guys for a work project. I've been trying wade through the guides but haven't found anything that has been the answer I'm looking for yet.

Basically, we have DVDs that we need to rip to either .avi, .mpg, or .mov so we can embed them in the software that controls the experiment. I'm pretty sure MPEG2 allows for the best resolution/picture quality of those filetypes, and it seems to play fine in the software.

Where we are running into problems is that some of the DVDs are copy-protected and thus the package we already purchased (#1 DVD Ripper) won't work on those.

While I've come to realize from reading that the absolute best quality comes from combining the best programs for each part of the task, since I'm the only relatively tech-savvy person in the group we would prefer to have a suite that would be an all-in-one solution.

So could someone please suggest a suite that allows us to insert any DVD, even if it's copy-protected, and rip it to an MPEG2 file?

Also, since we're presenting the clips on a PC but editing them on a Mac, we've decided we're free to do the ripping on whichever machine would be better. If anyone has any suggestions on that, please let me know.

Also, and this is just for my own edification, but are MPEG2 and SVCD the same thing, cause I know SVCD is a high-res .mpg file.

Thank you all for your help.

    -Steve

  2. Rip the DVD to your hard drive with either SmartRipper or DVDDecrypter. Both are free.

If you want the files in MPEG2 format, just demux the VOB.

If you want to use AVI, then I would use DVDx with a DIVX codec.

  3. Get DVD2SVCD. It's as close as you can get to an -all-in-one thing.

I work for the C.I.A. , and we're not allowed to rip copy-protected material for our experiments. If we could we would use that Ben Affleck and Jennifer lopez movie to torture and get information from Saddam
